PATENT OFFICE.
CAP FOR NAVES OF WHEELS.
'SPECIFICATIQN forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 739,330, dated September 29, 1903.
Application filed April 22, 1902. Renewed July 24:, 1903. Serial No. 166,911. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FERDINAND CHARRON and LEONCE GIRARDOT, citizens of the Republic of France, residing at No. 45 Avenue de la Grande Arme, Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Cap for N aves of Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improved cap for naves of wheels, particularly characterized by the arrangement which allows of renewing the oil provision without unmounting said cap. For this purpose the cap, which is directly screwed on the nave,'is provided at a point of its periphery with a filling-hole closed by a suitable plug. To empty the old oil, the wheel is caused to turn till the plug is at the bottom. The plug is then removed, and as soon as the old oil hasflowed out the wheel is caused to turn again, so that the hole of the cap be brought to the top, whereby the necessary quantity of new oil may be poured in the cap-box, and the plug is then replaced in position. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of the cap. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same, and Fig. 3 is a modified construction of the plug of the cap.
The cap is screwed by its threaded border a in the nave of the wheel and forms inwardly a box or receiver b for the oil. Outwardly the cap is formed with a collar 0, a polygonal portion cl, adapted to receive a key for screwing and unscrewing said cap, and with a full bottom or back piece f.
At a suitable point of the cap, preferably on one of the sides of the polygonal portion (1 and extending through the'thickness of said cap, is provided a screw-threaded hole 0 for pouring in or emptying the oil. This hole is closed by means of a screw-plug '0, with a beveled head, a washer r, of leather or any suitable material, being interposed between the cap and theplng to assure the tightness of the closing. 1
In order to prevent any accidental unscrewing of the plug by trepidations, two lugs m are provided at each side of the hole 0. These lugs are formed with openings in which is inserted, once the plug 0 is in place, a pin g, engaging the slot of .the head of the plug.
We may for. the same purpose, and to be sure that it will always be possible at the end of the screwing of the plug to bring a slot of the head of said plug opposite the pin, proride on said head several diametrical slots at, making a certain angle between them, as shown in Fig. 3.
, Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of oursaid invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is 1. Alubricating-oap for vehicle-wheels consisting of a hollow metallic-block opened at the side whereit is screwed to the nave and having on its polygonal periphery d a screwthreaded hole 0 for the pouring in and the emptying of the oil, and two perforated lugs an arranged at each side of the hole, in combination with'a plug 1; adapted to be screwed in the hole 0 and a leather washer r arranged beneath the head of theplug, and in combination with a pin 9 extending through both lugs m and partially engaging a slot of the head of theplug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A lubricating-cap for vehicle-wheels consisting of a hollow metallic block opened at the side where it is screwed to the nave and having on its periphery a screw-threaded hole 0 and two perforated lugs an arranged at each side of the hole, in combination with a plug o adapted to be screwed in the hole 0 and the head of which is provided with several diametrical slots at, in combinationwith a pin g extending through the lugs m and engaging one of the slots 99, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND OHARRON. LEONOE GIRARDOT.
