SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,806, dated September'29, 1903. Application iiled April 8, 1903. Serial No. 151,646. (No model-.l
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT APPLEGARTH, a subject of the King ofy GreatBritain, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam and Air Injectors for Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in steam and air injectors for furnaces, especially in apparatus of the kind for which 'a patent was granted to me in England bearing date the 15th day of January, 1901, N o. 991, and has for its object the simplification of the construction of such apparatus and facilitating the fixing of the apparatus, adjustment of its parts,and the removal of same for repairs or cleaning.
In order that the said invention may be fully understood, I will new describe the same with the aidA of the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken on the line as of Figs. 2 and 3 of an apparatus of the kind referred to with my present invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a front elevation of same; and Fig. 3, a similar elevation, but with the front cover removed to show more clearly the parts behind it.

a is a cylindrical or other suitably-shaped casting provided with lugs b, by means of which it is bolted to the furnace-front o. d' is a part of the same casting extending npwardly from the cylindrical part @and adapted to receive the steam connections, as hereinafter described.
d is the air-tube, which passes through a hole e in the furnace-front and carries at its inner end the nozzle or spreader f, through which steam and air are delivered intothe` furnace. The other end of this tube d is secured in the cylindrical part o of the casting by means of three set-screws g g' y',tapped into the part a in such manner that the axis of the tube may be adjusted by them to the angle best suited for delivering the air into the furnace. This adjustment is effected in the following way: It will be observed that the adjusting #screw g at the top is placedl somewhat farther forward than the screws g This screw gis pointed at its end and takes into a recess in the tube d, and thus forms a'kind of'fulcrum on which the tube d can be rocked upward, downward,or sidewise by screwing the screws :grg in or out more 0r less. This arrangement forms a simpler and cheaper means of adjusting the angle of the tube d than the spherical enlargement andv corresponding recess arrangement de scribed and shown in the specification of my before-mentioned prior patent.
' h is the steam-nozzle for introducing steam into the tube d. This nozzle'is screwed onto an externally-screwed piece of tube c, which passes through a hole 7' in the part a of the casting and is secured therein by a lock-nut la and the coupling Z, to which is screwed a tube m,which leads to any suitable part of the steam-space of the boiler, and has a valve or cock (not shown in the drawings) for regulating the supply of steam to the nozzle h.
n. is a screw-plug, by the removal of which l a wire or other instrument can be passed into and through the nozzle h to clear it of dirt or deposit,if and when necessary.
' p is a cover having in it holes q r for the admission of air to the tube d. This cover takes onto and is supported by two snugs s, cast on the part a of the casting, and is retained in place by a screw t.
It will be understood that the screw-plug n can be withdrawn and a wire passed through the nozzle h through the hole q in the cover p without removing the latter; but when it is required to remove the latter to get at any of the parts in or connected with the casting a a it is only necessary to remove the screw t, and the cover p can then be lifted ed, leaving the said parts exposed, as shown in Fig-3. will be understood that the supply of air to the tube d enters not only through the holes gf r in the cover p, but also at the back of the latterthrough the segmental spaces marked u in-Fig. 2.
It will be seen on comparing the above-described arrangements with those shown and described in the speciiication of my said for- Ion the said specification, inasmuch as in the present arrangement the steam connections are secured to the casting a a', which is permanently fixed to the furnace-front and are independent of the cover, whereas in the former patent they are fixed to the cover and had to be disconnected from the steam-pipe and removed with the cover whenever the latter had to be taken off. Furthermore, in the present arrangement the tube d can be removed from the casting a by simply slackening back the set-screws g g', whereas in the former patent the whole apparatus had to be dismounted to get the tube cl out for repair or renewal.
I claim- 1. Apparatus for assisting combustion and preventing smoke in boiler and other furnaces which consists of a casting a a', fixed to the furnace-front, an air-tube d secured adjustably to the said casting and projecting into the furnace, a steam-nozzle h secured to the part a of said casting and projecting into the tube d, steam connections for said nozzle,
and a cover for the front of the apparatus, combined, arranged and operating substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
2. In an apparatus for assisting combustion and preventing smoke in boiler and other furnaces, the combination with the casting a ct', an air-tube d carried thereby and projecting into the furnace, a steam-nozzle h also carried by the casting and projecting into the tube d, of a cover p independent of the steamnozzle h and its steam connections, and carried by and secured to the said casting a a', snugs s for supporting said cover and a screw for securing the cover to the casting, substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
