DANIEL OUDWO RTH, OF SHELBURNE, MASSACHUSETTS.
FINE-FUEL FURNACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
Application filed September 2'7, L907. Serial No. 394,851.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL ,OUDWORTH, of Shclburne, in the countyof Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in" Fine- Fuel Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My device relates to that class of improve ments which secure the combustion of coal and other inflammable substances by feeding the same to the combustion chamber by means of pressure and the object is to regulate the supply of coal and air, or steam, so as to secure perfect combustion. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1. shows a cross sectional view of said device. Fig. 2 is aplan view of the grate and parts. of the furnace. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the valve regulating the flow of coal.
c represents a pipe which is attached to a blower or which may be connected with a steam pipe; 1) represents a pipe communieating with a front part of, furnace and with the pipe a; c represents the outlet of the pipe a through which the contents enter the lower part of thefurnace s, and the end of pipe a is so arranged as to discharge a stream of airtor steam toward the front of furnace from which direction it is deflected upward by the guides 15 to meet the discharge from the'pipc b, d is a receptacle for coal, 0 is a pipethrough which the coal'passes from the receptacle d into the chamber f and. through the pipe 1 into the chamber h. A hinged part at 2 permits the regulation of the mouth of the chamber h by means of the rod which extends through the opening it and is connected to the part i at (1. A transparent substance at Z permits aview of the chamber h, m represents a valve which is hinged at n and which is connected with a screwat o. The air or steam is injected into the pipe by means of a fan or vated at 2 above the grate 1?.
said bridge wall y nearest the rear of the furpipe I) will cause the coal to pass into the re box, which it is designed to have fire when the coal is injected, and that the air or steam coming out of the pipe at at c, if under sufficient pressure will cause the coal to be suspended until it has been consumed. yrepresents a bridge wall which is eleclass of furnace attachments and this object I has heretofore been imperfectly attained. The valves (1 and b permit of the regulation of the quantity passing through the pipes a, and 1; into the furnace at both it and c, and the valve m regulates the flow of coal so that the quantity of each admitted is always subject to regulation independently of each other. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. In a finefuel furnace, the combination with a fire box, and an ash pit of a grate separating the fire .box from the ash pit, a pluralityof deflectors carried by said grate and depending'into the ash pit, the lower ends of said deflectors being curved rearwardly and each of said deflectors being slightlyshorter than the one in front of it, a chamber for coal,
means for supplying compressed air to' said chamber,and a second pipe located at the rear of the ash pit and discharging toward said deflectors.
2. In a fine fuel furnace, the combination The part of chamber h that the fluid passing through the i with a fire box and an ash pit, of a grate separating the fire box from the ash pit, a plurality of deflectors carried by said grate and depending into the ash pit, the lower ends of said deflectors being rearwardly curved and each of said deflectors being slightly shorter than the one in front of it, a chamber for coal located at'the mouth of the fire box, means for supplying coal to said chamber through -g scopes the top thereof, means for sup lying comthrough the rear Wall thereof to the exterior pressed air to said chamber to blow the said of the furnace. i coal'therefrom, asecond pipe located at the In testimony whereof I have affixed my rear of the ash pit and discharging toward signature, in presence of two Witnesses;
said deflectors, a hinged closure for the mouth DANIEL CUDWORTH. of the coal chamber, and a lever connected to Witnesses: said hinged closure, said lever passing through CHAS. E; HADLEY,
the upper Wall of the chamber and then WILLARD A. PRATT.
