PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXIS FRANCOIS GILLET, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWVA.
GASOLENE GENERATOR AND BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,050, dated June 7, 1904.
Application filed August 27, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXIS FRANCOIS GIL- LET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gasolene Generators and Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gasolene generators and burners; and my objects are to produce a generator and burner of exceedingly simple and cheap construction in which the jet-orifice cannot readily clog up, from which an obstruction can be readily and easily dislodged by the operator Without dismantling the apparatus and without employing other means than those forming a part of the apparatus, from which the gas-tip can be readily removed when a thorough cleaningis desired or to, permit a new tip to be substituted for an old one, in which the expansion and contraction of the valve-rod may occur without injury to the valve-seat, in which the valverod and packing-box containing the packing can be readily removed together to avoid impairing the efficiency of thepaeking, and in which provision is made fora thorough admixture of the air and gas before reaching the point of ignition, and to guard against waste of gas by imperfect combustion and the consequent emission of a disagreeable odor,
With these general objects in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization, as hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 isasimilar view, enlarged, of the burner-tip and front end of the generator and also shows the valve-rod in operative relation to said parts. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line III III of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation showing the valverod with the tip mounted thereon.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 des- Serial No. 170,899. (No model.)
ignates the generator in the form of a comparatively long tube provided with a longitudinal bore 2. At its rear end the tube is externally threaded,as at 3, and near said threaded portion is formed with an internallythreaded cup 5 and a passage 6, connecting said cupwith the bore 2. At its front end the bore 2 isenlarged, as at 7, by preference and forward of the enlargement 7 is formed with a' threaded enlargement 8,'so as to form a shoulder 9, and depending vertically from the front end of the tube is an integral lug 10, having a threaded opening 11 extending parallel with the tube.
12 designates a return-bend mixing-tube, the same having its mouth disposed in longitudinal alinement with and a slight distance forward of the gas-tip and its delivery end externally threaded and engaging the threaded opening 11. This tube at its delivery end is provided with an enlarged bore 31, at the inner end of which is located a shoulder 32, the burner-tube 13 being received and adjustable within this enlarged bore, the limit of its inward adjustment being fixed by the internal shoulder. Exteriorly of the delivery end of the tube is formed the flange 38, adapted to abut against the lug 10 to form a tight joint.
The gas-tip is in the form of a short screwbolt 14, with its front end tapered, as at 15, to fit with a gas-tight joint against the shoulder 9. Said bolt is provided with a central longitudinal threaded passage 16, terminating at its rear end in a non-threaded enlargement 17, so as to form a sharp valve seat 18, andat its opposite end in a tapered portion 19, communicating at its apex with the fine gas-tip orifice 20.
21 designates a valve-rod fitting loosely in the bore 2 and extending snugly through the packing-box 22, screwed upon the threaded portion 3 of the tube, said packing-box containing the packing 23 in order that the removal of the box shall likewise effect the removal of the packing. At its rear end the valve-rod is provided with the usual disk-handle 24 and near its front end is formed with a tapered or conical portion 25 to bear against seat 18 of the gas-tip, and thus control the passage of vapor from the generator through the gas-tip. At the front or reduced end of the tapered or conical portion 25 the valverod is provided with a threaded extension 26, engaging the threaded passage 16 of said gastip, and flattened, as at 26, at one or more sides to permit the vapor to pass through passage 16 when the valve is unseated. Projecting forwardly from said threaded extension is a resilient needle-point 27, adapted as the valve-rod is turned in one direction or the other to move forwardly or rearwardly through the orifice 20.
In practice the generator is supplied with oil from a tank or reservoir 28, having an apertured plug 29 at its lower end screwed down into the cup 5, the plug provided with an exterior flange 84, received and held in the apertured recess 35, forined'in the bottom of the reservoir, and at its upper or feed end the reservoir is provided with a depending annular bearing or support 36, between which and the top of the reservoir is received the flange 37 of the feed-tube 38, the lower end of which tube projects some distance within the reservoir to serve as an indicator when filling the latter, the upper end of the tube being provided with a threaded nipple 39, formed integral therewith and closed by means of asuitably-packed cap 30.
This apparatus is especially adapted to be used in conjunction with a suitable sad-iron, (not shown,) though it need not be confined to that relation, and when ready for operation the operator turns the disk-handle to withdraw the conical portion of the valve-rod from engagement with its seat 18 and incidentally withdraw the needle-point 27 from engagement with the orifice 20, it being understood that the generator must previously be heated in any suitable manner in order to be raised to a suflicient temperature to instantly vaporize the oil passing through it. This vapor is discharged through the orifice into the mouth of the mixing-tube and in entering the latter creates a suction which draws in the necessary supply of air at the same point to support combustion and vapor and air by the time it enters the burner-tube being thoroughly and intimately mixed and in the best possible condition for perfect combustion at the burnertube orifices, where it is ignited. The flame keeps the generator at the requisite temperature to vaporize the oil as long as the valve remains unscated. Should the action of the burner show that the gas tip orifice was clogged or partially clogged, the operator by the proper manipulation of the disk-handle could reciprocate the needle-point through said orifice and remove the obstruction without arresting the generating operation, as the needle-point is not intended to completely close said orifice, the latter being efiected and the operation closed by advancing the valve-rod until its conical portion is again seated tightly against seat 25.
It will be noticed by a careful inspection of the drawings in this application that the apparatus possesses the following advantages, to witi a perfectly straight course for the pas-- sage of the vapor until it escapes from the gastip orifice, so as to reduce to the minimum the liability of clogging the latter and to facilitate such cleaning operation should the burner-tip orifice become clogged. A straight passage offers the least opportunity for dirt to lodge and impair the free circulation of the gas. It will also be noted that the gas-tip is made of a separate piece from the generator, so that in case of necessity it can be removed to en able it to be more thoroughly cleaned than where such operation is performed by the resilient needle-point. Furthermore, in case of injury it can be replaced with another cheaply, and the same is true of injury to any other part, without requiring the substitution of an entirely new apparatus. It will furthermore be noted that the valve-rod rearward of the gas-tip is not threaded and has no threads at any other point than within the tip, the result being said rod is free to expand when the generator is hot without affecting the flow of gas and to contract in cooling without binding on or injuring the valve-seat. The arrangement of the packing-box admits of the removal of the rod and box from the generator without disturbing the packing.
It will be apparent that various changes may be resorted to as regards the detail construction, form, proportion, and arrangement of the parts without departing from the essential spirit and scope or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In adevice of the class described, the combination with a reservoir, of a generator-tube connected therewith, the outer end of the tube provided with a stepped bore, having a sharp shoulder formed thereby, a gas-tip received within the outer end of the tube, the inner end of the gas-tip being conical, the sharp shoulder and conical end engaging to form a tight joint.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a suitable source of supply, of a generator-tube, a valve-rod received therein, a gas-tip mounted in the outer end thereof, an apertured lug depending from the generatortube, a mixing-tube, the delivery end of which is received in the aperture in the lug, aflange on the delivery end of the mixing-tube, the flange engaging the lug to form a tight joint and a burner-tube received within the mixingtube and projecting therefrom.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a suitable source of supply, a generator-tube, a valve-rod therein, a gas-tip and a lug depending from the generator-tube, of a mixing-tube mounted in the lug, the delivery end of the mixing-tube provided with an enlarged bore, a burner-tube adjustably re- IO ceived within the enlarged bore of the mixingtube and an internal shoulder formed in the mixing-tube, the limit of inward adjustment of the burner-tube being fixed by the shoulder. 4
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
