TO ALL WHOM IT MAY oonounn:
Be it known that I, JnLus BonnroL, of the city and county ofPhiladelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Draw-Pincers for Wire and Tubes; and I do hereby declare the following to "be a full and correct description of the same, suificient to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my device.
Figure 2 is a side View of the same.
Figure '3 is a perspective, half-side and half-end'view; and
Figure 4, a sectional plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts of the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in providing two rollers with a cam, each of said rollers being held in an adjustable frame, and so arranged that, when an article, such as a bar of iron, is placed between the two rollers in such a manner that both rollers touch the bar, the same is securely and firmly held between the cam portions of the rollers, and the more strain the bar is subjected to the tighter the rollers will hold the same. As the space between the cam portions of the rollers gets smaller, the nearer the cams approach each other.
A, in the drawings, may represent the top plate, and'B the bottom plate of the frame, between which the rollers U D are pivoted on bolts or shafts c d, placed in the plates A and B, through their rounded projections, 11 and b. The part E of a double joint or'hinge is pivoted between the platesA and B, at their. rear parts, e, on a bolt, 0, while the part F of'the double hinge is pivoted on the boltf', between the projectionsfof the hook G. On the shafts or bolts 0 and d, above the rounded parts, a and 6, of the plate A, are'keyed two sectional cog-wheels, H I, gearing with each other 'in such a manner that, when they are in position, as shown in fig. 1, the cam portions of the rollers G 'D are beginning to near each other. The rollers C D are each provided witha cam, g 71, the circumferential line of therollers with their cams thus becoming comparatively parabolic, as illustrated in fig. 4. Th'eneairer. the cams approach each other as the rollers turn, the smaller the spaces become between them, until an object placed between them prevents them from coming closer-to each other. The friction of the subject between the rollers, when a drawing strain is exerted on the former, serves to tighten thehold of the rollers on the same more and more. The hook G is provided with a. slot, j, by means of which it may be attached to any cross-bar or piece in the. shop.
The applicationand operation of my device are very simple. The hook G being attached to any suitable place, the end of the bar, tube, or wire to be drawn is placedwith one end between the cams g h, which hold the same firmly, and the more firmly, the more power is exerted in drawing it, and the line of drawing will always be towards the person drawing, as thodouble hinge will allow theinstrument to be turned in any direction. By means of the cog-wheels,- which have handles the cams or jaws may be set to any-sized bar or tube, so as to insure a firm hold at once at the beginning of the drawing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anchdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The wire and tube-drawing device, consisting of the frame A B, with rollers G D, which have cams or jaws g It, cog-wheels H I, double joint or hinge E F, and hook'G, substantially as and for the purposes described To the above I have signed my name, this 30th day of October, 1867.
