HAM E-STRAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,167, dated September 15, 1903.

Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. GAILOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York,h ave invented new and useful Improvements in Hams-Straps, of which the following is a specification.

By means of this invention a hame can bereadily clasped or freed, as required, and securely held when in use; and this invention in hame strap or fastener resides in Vcertain novel features of construction set forth in-the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional edge View of the strap or fastener in engaging position. Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. l, the device being unlocked or in freeing position. Fig. 3 is a section along x, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a plan View of Fig. 2.

In the drawings are shown what may be called a base-piece 4 and straps 2 and 3,

with a lever l. These parts when formed of metal are strong and durable and can be be made to give a compact structure.

The lever is shown fulcrumed at e to one of the straps, and its fulcrum end is formed into ears or catch portions. When an eye of the hams-wood is slipped onto the lever or handle l and the latter swung to the straps or to locking position, such lever will hold itself in place or be locked by the strain on the strap. When swung to freeing position, the eye of the haine-wood is thrown 0E the hook or ears at the fulcrum end of the lever and can be slipped off the free end of the same.

The strap 2 can be formed from a fiat piece of steel and is shown adjustable along basepiece 4. The hook-shaped end portion of this strap or piece 2 forms a bearing for the fulcrum e. for example, seven--enable the strap 2 to be set along the base-piece for the plugs or studs to slip into various eyes of the strap and hold the same in varying adjustment for shortening or lengthening, as required.

The strap 3 can bepformed of hoop-iron and is shown bent double and also perforatedas, for example, by seven or other suitable number of holes in--each shank. This strap or loop can be similarly adjusted along base- A suitable number of eyes or holes-` piece 4 by having different ones of its eyes slipped over the studs f. These studs when threaded and provided with nuts g will hold the parts connected. rlwo studs are shown; but this number can be varied.

Directions for use'can be worded as follows: Remove both nuts g and remove base 4,. The loop or strap 3 can be slipped to engagement with one haine loop or eye. The strap 2- is placed on, the studs to the position required by the user, and strap 3 is also placed thereon, as desired. The nuts being then screwed on, the parts are secured to one another. In placing strapsV 2 and 3 in position either one may be put on first, or strap 2 can be placed between the shanks or ends of strap 3, as the user may desire. The basepiece 4 being suitably flanged or troughshaped, the parts when in place are held in alinement.

When the device is secured to one hameeye, the other haine-'eye is slipped over the free end of the lever l to the hook or catch part at the fulcrum. The lever'is then swung to locking position and carries the hame-eye over the hook end of strap 2, and`at the same time such lever automatically snaps and holds itself in locking position as its free end is swung to the straps.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A hame-fastener, comprising a flanged base-piece provided with openings, a strap extending between the flanges and the basepiece, provided with a series of openings and carrying on its outer end a catch-lever for connecting a hame thereto, a doubled strap extending between the flanges of said basepiece, said doubled strap provided with a series of openings adapted to register with the openings in the first-mentioned strap and forming a loop for connecting a hame thereto, and means adapted to extend through the openings in the straps and base-piece for fas- IOO carrying on its outer end a catch-lever for connecting a hanie thereto, a'doubled strap extending between the flanges of said base` A piece and engaging the upper and lower faces of said first-mentioned strap, seid doubled strap provided with :t series of openings adapted to register with the openings in the rst-mentioned strap and forming a loop for connecting-a hame thereto, and means adapted to extend through the openings in the straps and base-piece for fastening said basepieee and straps together.

3. A haine-fastener, comprising a flanged base-piece provided with openings, n strap extending between the flanges of the basepiece, provided with a series of openings and carrying on its outer end a catch-lever for connecting a heme thereto, a doubled strap extending between the flanges of said base- WILLIAM H.
