BELT-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,856, dated April 11, 1899.

Application filed November 21,1898. Serial No. 696,966. (a. model.) 7 7 To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. HUMPHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing near Jamestown, in the county of Stutsman and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompaying drawings, andto the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clasp-fasteners, and especially to a fastener designed for use on belts, suspenders, or any other articles, my object being to provide a device of this character in which the nose of the hook is adapted to spring outward to allow an eye to be hookedthereto.

More specifically the present invention consists of providing two plates, one of which is bent to form a hook and made, preferably, of spring metal, while the second plate has a contracted projection bent inward or toward the plate carrying the hook and designed to bear against the broad face of said plate while an eye is forced between the outer face of the plate with the bent projecting end and the end of. the hook, the eye being allowed to pass between said two members as the nose of the hook bends outward.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically defined and illustrated.

My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part-of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved fastener as applied to a belt. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal view through the belt. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the fasteners hooked together.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a belt, to which the fasteners are secured. The eye 13 is of ordinary construct-ion, being provided with a transverse slot, in which the end of the belt is fastened, and has an aperture designed to engage over the nose of the hook. The plates C and D, formingapart of the fastener, have each transverse slots D and O, in which slots the other end of the belt is secured, as shown. Each plate 0 and D has enlarged circular-shaped apertures, as shown, and plate D has an integral spring-hook d, and the plate O has a contracted end 0 which is inwardly bent, and its end is designed to bear against the inner face of the plate D, as shown in the drawings, so that the outer plate 0 is disposed at an angle, as shown in Fig. 2, with its outer face bearing against the inner face of the hook d. When the eye is fastened to the book, as the eye passes under the latter the hook, being resilient, will spring out, as the plate 0 is prevented from bending owing to its projection 0 bearing against the inner face of the plate D, as will be understood.

If preferred, the two plates 0 and D may be fastened together at their rear ends, or they may be made in one piece, if preferred.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I A belt-fastening, comprising the two sepa rate plates-O and D with belt engaging same in elongated registering apertures, said plate D having a spring-hook d, a contracted end 0 of .plate 0, bent at right angles to the face of its plate, and bearing against the inner face of the plate D, combined with the apertured plate B designed to engage with hook d and be prevented from unfastening by the end of the plate 13 coming in contact with the said angled end 0 as shown and described.
