BUCKLE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .ToHN W. PARMENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesito improvements in buckles, and more particularly relates to that class of buckles used in connection with belts, although the invention may be applicable to buckles of other types.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of buckles of this kind so as to render them more efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the inner side of a device embodying my invention. I Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.
Like parts are represented by similar characters of reference throughout the several views.
In the said drawings, a represents the frame of the buckle which is preferably constructed of sheet metal with its sides and ends grooved or channel-shaped on their inner sides, as shown. This frame has extending from side to side at the center thereof a cross-piece, a1, and at each end of the cross-piece laterally or rear wardly extending ears, a2 a3, all of these parts being preferably formed integral from the same piece of metal. The cross-piece, a1, is also grooved, or formed channelshaped, on its inner side, and is further bent inwardly at its center to form a curved or convex surface, a4, on its inner side. The channel-shaped or grooved construction of the cross-piece, al, will provide on each side thereof two bearing surfaces, a1 a5, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, and the cross-piece being formed of sheet metal will be yielding or resilient in its nature. Pivoted to the ears, a2 a3, is a clamping lever, b, having at the pivotal point thereof a tongue or flange, b1, extending at right angles thereto. This tongue or flange is formed on a curve at its outer side so as to provide a convex surface, b2, as shown. The clamping lever, b, is also provided with a loop, b3, to form a point of attachment for the belt.
` In operation, the lever being in the position shownl in Fig. l, the belt c is slipped in between the same and the cross-piece, a, and the lever then thrown down in a plane parallel with the frame of the buckle, as shown in Fig. 2, clamping the material between the tongue, b2, and the cross-piece, a1. It will be seen that the tongue, b2, and cross-piece, a1, will furnish two opposing convex surfaces, and the cross-piece, al, being of a resilient nature, will be permitted to yield slightly to provide for different thicknesses of belts.
The portion, bl, of the clamping lever, is preferablyI formed with a convex surface so that substantially only the central portion thereof will clamp the material, for the reason that if it was formed straight along its entire length, the ends of the cross-piece and the frame, being practically unyielding, would materially interferewith the proper co-operation of the resilient cross-piece and the clamping lever, to permit them to accommodate themselves to different thicknesses of material. The opposite bearing surfaces, a4 a5, on this cross-piece Will also assist in holding the belt in its proper position of adjustment and prevent same from slipping.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. In a buckle, a frame, a resilient cross-piece in said frame, said cross-piece being formed with a convex surface on one side, a clamping lever pivoted in said frame, said v clamping' lever having a convex clamping surface adapted to co-operate with the resilient convex clamping surface 0f said cross-piece, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a buckle, a frame having a central cross-piece, said c1'oss-piece being formed of resilient material and being grooved so as to provide projecting bearing surfaces on opposite sides thereof, said cross-piece being also bent so as to present a convex bearing surface, and a clamping j JOHN W.
