Description

I PATENTED SEPT. 15, 1903..
A.- STEELE. S APETY ATTAUHMENT FOR FAUCETS.
APPLICATION FILED MAB. 3. 1903.
N0 MODEL.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS I nut a are in proximity to the downwardly- UNITED STATES Patented September 15, 1903.
ANDREW STEELE, OF RIDGEFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR FAUCETS..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,031, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed March 3, 1903.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgefield, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Faucets, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved attachment for a faucet which is intended to prevent the breaking of a pitcher, glass, bowl, or similar article when the latter is held so as to catch the flow or discharge from the faucet.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompany ing drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a faucet provided with my improved attachment; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the attachment removed from the faucet, and Fig. 3 aplan view of the attachment.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, reference being made to Fig. 1, I have shown at a an ordinary faucet having a downwardly-directed discharge-spout a a central vertically-arranged valve-casing a and a valve a, all these parts being of the usual form and construction. In devices of this class as usually constructed the valvecasing a extends below the body portion of the faucet and the valve which is held in place by a nut or similar device a below the bottom portion of the valve-casing, and the bottom portion of the valve-casing and the directed discharge-spout a of the faucet, and in the operation of placing or holding a pitcher, goblet, or similar vessel beneath the discharge-spout of the faucet the lower or bottom portion of the valve-casing or the nut a is frequently struck by the said pitcher, goblet, or similar vessel, and the latter is broken, and in order to prevent this I provide an attachment b, which is composed of soft rubber, rubber and canvas, or other suitable elas- Serial No. 145,951. (No modelJ tic material and which comprises a cupshaped body portion which is open at the top and adapted to receive the downwardly-directed or bottom portion of the valve-casing and also the nut (IF-and the top of which is provided at one side with an outwardly and downwardly curved neck or spout b which is segmental in cross-section and adapted to and it may be replaced in position for use, as
shown in Fig. 1, whenever necessary by simply holding it inproper position'and forcing the body portion thereof upwardly onto the downwardly-directed portion or end of the valve-casing and causing the parts thereof to assume the position shown in Fig. 1.
When this attachment is in position, there is no danger of a pitcher, goblet, or other vessel striking the metal of the faucet rearwardly of the discharge-spout thereof, and if the said pitcher, goblet, or other vessel should strike the elastic attachment the vessel would not be injured or broken, and with this improvement the vessel may be pressed against the'attachment, so as to steady it, and thus. the attachment may be made to facilitate the filling of a pitcher, goblet, or similar vessel, as well as to prevent the breaking thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An attachment for faucets composed of soft flexible material and comprising a body portion open at the top and adapted to be placed on the downwardly-directed portion of the valve-casing, and provided with a laterally and downwardly curved neck portion open at the top and which is adapted to fit against the discharge-spout of the faucet and the neck thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. An attachment for faucets comprising a flexible and elastic device adapted to be placed on the bottom of the valve-casing and having a curved neck member adapted to fit against the rear side of the discharge-spout,
against the discharge-spout of the faucet and the neck thereof, substantially as shown and described. 7
3. An attachment for faucets composed of soft elastic material adapted to be connected withthe bottom portion of the body of the faucet rearwardly of the discharge spout thereof and to cover the same, said attachment being open at the top and being provided with a curved neck portion which abuts substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of March, 1903.
ANDREW STEELE.
