PATENT OFFICE.
SVEN II. ESBJORN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WADS- \VORTI-l, HOWLAND AND COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF BOSTON; MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
SKETCHING-EASEL SLPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,589, dated August 18, 1903.
Application filed May 5, 1903. Serial No. 155,777- (No model. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SVEN I'I. ESBJGRN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, haveinventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Sketching-Easels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sketching-easels, and it is especially well adapted for use in making water color sketches or paintings out of doors or in rooms or studios, although it is also very useful for any other sketching or painting purpose.
My invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved easel, showing it in position for use. Fig. 2 is an interior view of one of the front tripod-legs, showing the pad or card holder bracket in position for use; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing said bracket folded on the inside of said tripod-leg when the device is not in use.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the difierent parts of the drawings.
In the drawings I have represented a tripod composed of a pair of-front legsA A and a rear leg B, pivotally connected at their upper ends by means of a suitable hinge-plate or holder C, as is common in devices of this kind. In practice I provide the tripod-legs A A B with pivoted extensions A A B, pivoted to the lower ends of the respective legs A A B and provided with suitable clamping or fastening devices a a b for holding the said extensions properly secured to the parts A A B when the tripod is in use, as represented in Fig. 1.
The pad, block, or frame supporting device consists of a pivoted jointed support or bracket, one for each of the front legs A A, and each such device is composed of a pair of links or plates D E, pivoted together at F.
,The link or blade D is pivoted to the inside of the tripod-leg A at G, as shown, and is provided with an extension D, which serves as a rest for the front lower portion of the pad,
block, or panel H when supported on the tri pod or easel, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The free end of the link or blade E is preferably provided with a notch or recess e, adapted to be interlocked with a pin or project-ion I, secured to the interior of the tripod-leg A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by which arrangement the lower links or blades D D are held in the operative position shown in said Figs. 1 and 2, in which position they serve as a support for retaining the block or pad H in the inclined position shown in Fig. 2, and while in such inclined position the top edge of said block or pad H rests against the front legs A A above the supporting device, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2. When the tripod is not in use, the links E E are disconnected from the pins I I and the links or plates D E are swung upward to the inoperative position shown in Fig. 3. When the links or plates D E are swung upward, the notch or recesse on the link or plate E is interlocked with an upper pin 1, attached to the leg A, as shown in Fig. 3. The said pin I is also represented in Fig. 1.
The device is very simple in construction and may readily be attached to any ordinary tripod or easel, and when locked in operative position it serves as a practical and useful means for supporting a pad, block, or frame in a convenient and desirable inclined position for sketching or painting purposes.
The device although particularly applicable to folding tripods may to equal advantage be used on easels of any well-known form or construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is--- The herein-described easel, consisting of tripod-legs pivoted together in combination with folding pad-supports connected to the members D, E, Substantially as and for the front tripod-legs each such support consistpurpose set forth. ing of a link or member D, pivoted in its In testimony whereofIhave affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
lower end to the front leg, a brace or mem- 5 her E, pivotally connected to the part I), and SVEN H. ESBJORN.
means detachably securing said brace to said Witnesses: front leg, and a projection D, on the link D, outside of the pivotal connection between the ALBAN ANDREN, LESLIE L. TURNER.-
