PATENT ()FFICE.
WVILLIAM MARY HUBERT J OOK IN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEPARABLE BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,334, dated July 21, 1903.
Application filed March 17, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM MARY HUBERr JOCKIN, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at New York, in the county of New York newand useful Improvements in Separable Buttons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to separable buttons, and belongs to that class of collar, cuff, and
vided at one end with a relatively large head and at the other end with a relatively small head that can be easily passed through, for
collar. Such buttons are further supplied with locking-plates and devices to secure the small head and shank against repassing through the buttonhole until unlocked; and the object of my invention is the production of a special locking-plate furnished with a lever-look of particular construction.
I accomplish the object stated by means of the parts and their association illustrated in Figure 1 represents a bottom'view of the locking-plate and lever with the lever closed beneath the smaller head of the shank. Fig. 2 is a vertical mid-sectional view of the-parts when locked together- Fig. 3 is abottom plan view of the locking-plate with the lever open. Fig. 4 is a side View of the shank and heads, and Fig. 5 is a plan View of a plate sometimes used and which may be permanently sewed to a necktie or other garment.
Like letters refer to likeparts in the several views.
Considering the drawings, letter A marks the shank, and B the major head, and O the minor head.
LetterD designates the locking-plate,which is provided with a keyhole-slot E, extending from the center of the plate toward the edge.
Serial No. 148,241. (No model.)
Pivoted to the locking-plate is the curved lever F, which has a hollow protuberance G,
formed by pressing the metal outwardly durtuberance across the narrower part of the keyhole-slot and against the shank next the small head, which is eifectuallylo'ckedin position. Furthermore, the lever F is elastic, and this quality holds the parts in their locked engagement as strongly as is necessary for the purpose.
To release the lock and separate the button, the end of the lever is raised against its elasticity until the protuberance is clear of the slot and then turned away from the slot. The shank can now be removed from the lockingplate.
The modified plate J (shown in Fig. 5) is furnished with orifices K, by means of which the broad end of the plate can be stitched to a necktie, for instance, and the round tip of the plate is unattached in order that it may be raised and the finger passed behind it to operate the lever.
I am aware that separable buttons have been made having spring-controlled levers movable into engagement with a recessed shank or the like, and I do not claim such mechanism, broadly.
What I claim, and desire 'to secure by Let- I ters Patent of the United States, is-- In a separable button, the combination of the shank provided with relatively'larger and smaller heads, the said smaller head forming a shoulder with the shank, a lock-plate having akeyhole-slot, the larger end of the slot admitting the smaller head of the shank and the narrower portion of the slot adapted to engage the said shoulder, an elastic lever pivoted to the said plate and adapted to be moved over the said slot and against the shank, the said lever being provided with a hollow protuberance on its side next to said lock-plate which enters the said keyhole-slot when the lever is closed and wherein it is held by the elasticity of the lever thereby locking the lever in its closed position, the edge of said protuberance passing beneath the smaller head, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM MARY lIUBER'l JOOKIN. \Vitnesses:
JOHN P. BYRNE, HORATIO S. MOAT.
