Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC s. BURKE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON OR STUD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,395, dated May 29, 1883.
' Application'filed October 23,1892. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known thatI, IsAAo S. BURKE,of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in 1 Buttons or Studs; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings. making a part of the same,
is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved button'open, the position of the parts when closed being shown by the dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a back or rear view with the parts in the posi tion shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of the button closed.
My invention is designed as an improvement upon the stud patented to Dutee Wilcox, Oc-
i the plate B, while the other 1 tober 25, 1859, and numbered 25,928.
It has for its object the more perfect operation of the button orstud; and it consists in so constructing and arranging the curved hooks that the same will be locked and will not become separated before the proper time during the insertion of the button in the garment.
When it is desired to insert buttons of this class in the button-hole the plate B, with its hook D, is raised to a position at right angles with the plate A. This leaves the hook D and plate B with a slight play, which allows it, when pressure is applied, to move back far enough to permit the hook U to strike upon the outside of the button-hole and be diverted from its passage through as the necessary pressure is continued. In my invention 1 overcome this difficulty by constructing the hook D with a projecting lip, E, which snaps or catches over the end of the book 0 when the former is forced back into position for insertion, as shown in Fig. 1. B the? button in the position shown in Fig. 3,
Taking the parts of when it is desired to insert it in the buttonhole I raise the plate B, asshown in Figs. 1
and 2, the projecting lip E covering the end of the book 0 and holding the parts in that position while the hooks are passed through, after which the plates are forced together by the pressure of the thumb and fingers, and
the hooks spread out upon the under side.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The button or stud herein described, consisting of the plates A and B, and the hooks O and D, the hook D being extended at the knee and forming a lip covering the end of said hook 0 when the device is adjusted for insertion in' the button-hole, as and for the purposes specified.
ISAAC S. BURKE.
