Description

Patented July '7, 1903.
AATENT ",FICE
.IO'I-IN'B. JONES, or OHIOAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOLSTEFI-FIOLL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,864, dated July 7, 1903.
l Application filed November 14, 1902. .Serial No. 131,320. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t 'may concern: "Be it known thatI, JOHN B. JONES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BOlster-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bolster-rolls, the object being to greatly simplify the construction of devicesof this class, and consequently the cost of manufacture. y y
Another object is to produce a bolster-roll in which the various members comprising the frame thereof may be packed or crated separately and shipped from the manufacturer in this condition ready to be assembled. In this. way a great deal less room is taken up i in shipment or in storing than would be the `case were they assembled.
To such end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, a description whereof will be found in the following Y. 1p specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a complete bolster-roll embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the sheetmetal casing forming the cylindrical wall thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmental perspective illustrating the manner of assembling the `roll, and Fig. 4 is a" perspective view of one "of the end pieces.
jas
In the views, A A are the end pieces, which are preferably circular in outline and preferably covered with suitable material to present a pleasing and finished appearance.
These end pieces are notched, as seen at c, Y
and two reinforcing-strips B B are seated in these notches, so that their outer faces will be Bush with the :periphery of the ends. They may be, secured in place in any suitable manner-as, for instance, by nailing them thereto or by gluing them in place, as may be desired. These reinforcing and nailing strips are suitably separated to leave an opening in the casing through which the pillows may be inserted in the use of the roll.
Each of the reinforcing-strips B is provided with a binding-strip D, nailed or otherwise secured thereto, and adapted to receive and hold in place the side edges of the casing or wall C. As shown, this casing consists of a piece of sheet metal, which is preferably made up of aluminium in order to be as light as possible; but it obviously may be made of sheet-tin, steel, or similar materials, so as to be capable of beingrolled up into cylindrical form, which is the contour given to the bolster-roll, as shown in the drawings. The ends of this casing are nailed or screwed to theend pieces A, making a very substantial and light frame for the roll. The casing may then be covered with a suitable fabric or other covering,{the edges of which are nailed to the reinforcing or nailing strips B. I have shown a brace E (see Fig.' l) secured in the reinforcing-strips and extending around the inner face of the casing to assist in holding it in its proper shape. e' The various parts of this roll may be nested or packed together' for shipment or storage, and the parts may be readily assembled. After the reinforcing-strips are secured in place upon the end pieces the casing C may be slipped in the grooves of the bindingwhich are seated in said binding-strips, and
the ends vsecured upon the end pieces, substantially as described.
2. In a bolster-roll, the combination with endpieces, of suitable reinforcing-strips adapted tobe secured upon said end pieces so as to be flush with the periphery thereof, binding-strips upon said reinforcing-strips, and a sheet-metal casing, the side edges of vwhich are secured in said binding-strips, and
the end edges upon the endpieces, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 30th day of October, A. D. 1902.
JOHN B. JONES.
