KNOCKDOWN BOX.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
I atented Nov. 26, 191% VApplication led'April 3, 1912` Serial No. 688,210.
^ a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville. in county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I'nockdown Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in knock down boxes which may be flattened out when in the knocked down condition so that it willA occupy a minimum of space and will ail-ord support not only at the edges but also at the center for its fellows stacked thereabove. f
Further objects are to provide simple means for fastening the box when set up and ready for use as well as for knocking it down when not in use.
In'the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of the box in its knocked down condition. Fig. Q is a horizontal section through the box in its set up condition. Fig. 3 is a. detail view. Fig. 4t is a modification.
The present invention comprises a sheet of inaterial'bentto form top l, bottom Q, sides-i3 andi-i4, as well as flap 5 by creasing Yline Gre-6. At the edges cleats 7, secured.` These are preferably of e wood and beveled 'at vtheir ends whereby adjacent edges lit Veach other and forml a miter joint when the box is set up and around the outside thin metal lstrips S, 8 are secured. the tacks extendingf-through the material ot which the boxis made, and also through the cleats as well as through the metal strips, and at the ends of the flap the metal strips e 'itendzbeyond the top of the box as at 9. f) and are adapted toeverlap the edge of the adjacent member, preferably the top of the box when the box is set up and secured together. a
Two different methods of constructing the ends are illustrated. one in Figs. l and v,lin which each end is composed of two partially overlapping liaps l0 and ll, the outer edges of whieh are secured between the sides of the body portion of the box and the cleats.
adjacent to `which a bend 12 is formed. These fia'ps are of sulicient length to partially overlap each other and they are provided with registering orifices 13, 13, in one although one may be used if desired by making these corrugations in the buttons in the form .of screw threads and securing al cap thereover after the' assemblage 0f the parts, but no cap is really required, as the pressure ofthe contents within the box when filled will give the required lateral support to hold the flaps outward and together. The length of these buttons preferably corre sponds to the depth of the cleats so that in the knocked down condition of the box a supportis formed approximately midway between the cleats upon which the body portion of the box next above rests. In the modified construction these ends would be the size of the end of the box thus overlapping each other throughout their full area so that each end wol ld be in two thicknesses of the material, rein orcing each other and giving added strength and support. In this way a very simple but useful knock down box is provided of few parts, five pieces of material in all save the cleats and metal strips, which of course are additional. all of which are easily and quickly assembled and when in commercial condition. require no skill to .set them up or knock them dowm thus making a desirable shipping case for the market which may be manufactured at a small initial cost. and which, when `in use, will be most eflectroil in the shipping and storing of the goods it may contain.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what` I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent iisi l j l. A knock down hox comprising a sheet of material bent to form top, bottom and sides, end cleats, end flaps, the outer edges of which are secured between the cleats and the body portion of the box, and the inner ends of which are adapted to overlap from opposite sides of thel box and provided with registering orifices adapted to receive fastening means whereby Ithe overlapping ends are secured together.
Lomo/m 2. A knock ciown box comprising a sheet ntestimony whereof ax my si of matera bent to-forxn a top, bottom,l and in the presence of two *Widsizuessesu sides 'mtered cleats Secured to 'the edes thereof and end flaps having registering cri- 'HARRSGN B W 5 ices therein and means adapted to extend \Vitnesses:
