PATENTED JULY 7, 1903,
UNITED STATES Patented' July A7, 19013.
PATENT UEETQE,
FOLDING IRONINGBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 732,764, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed May 16,1901. Serial No. 60.611. (Model.)
To a/Zwtom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MAJoRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring field, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in folding ironing-boards, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, durable, and convenient device that may be quicklyand easily folded to be laid away in a small space or opened out when desired to be used as a table or ironing-board. These objects I attain by Vmeans of the device hereinafter set forth in the specification and particularly specified in the claims, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the entire device ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the frame folded for laying away. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the connecting-piece with its two hinged supports C and C2. Fig. 4 is a detailed view showing one of the cross-pieces D with the grooves D2 and D3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Ais the board on the top of the frame, made any desired size and shape.
B is a connecting-piece. Said connectingpi-ece is provided with notches B2 B2 for receiving a cross-piece D at each end. End notches B2 are made on an angle or bevel toward the center of the ironing-board to fit over grooves D2 and D3, cut in the cross-pieces D deeper on the inner lower side of the end cross-pieces D and on the upper outer side of the same. When there is a weight or strain on the ironing-board, it is held firmly by means of the connecting supports or braces C and C2 and cannot fold while in use. As the board A is secured on pins F2 in the upper cross-pieces F, they prevent the top from spreading, and thus hold the connecting-piece B in place.
The legs or end supports E comprise members which cross each other near the top. Each end support is provided with two con-y necting-pieces D and F. Between and. secured to said connecting-pieces F and D is an upright Gr. Near the top of said uprights are hinged or bolted the upper ends of the braces or supports C C2. Said supports C and C2 are also pivoted by means of bolts at their lower ends to the connecting-piece B for permitting the same to be raised and lowered in folding the device.
The device is operated thus: The two supports C and C2 being hinged at both ends permit the connecting-piece B to be raised up, so as to freethe notched ends from the crosspieces D, and the legs E may then be folded one on each side of the connecting-piece B, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus in a compact form the same may be laid away when not in use, the board on top being removed, and for' this purpose it may be provided with holes in the lower side to receive pins F2 in the crosspieces F. Thus the board can be quickly placed upon and removed from the framework.
way while moving back and forth in ironing upon the same. The piece B is placed so near the door that'it is entirely out of the way of all garments being ironed and is made long enough so that the supporting-pieces C and C2 will also be entirely out of the way. Thus garments of any size and character may be ironed Without Wrinkling or injuring them by the framework of the ironing-board.
As thus constructed the ironing-board is firm and of sufficient strength to permit two or more operators to'work upon the same at the same time without shaking or breaking the same.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. An ironing-board consisting of a notchedv connecting-piece, B, with pivoted supports, C, C2, cross-legs E having cross-pieces, D, provided' with grooves to receive the notched portions of the connecting-piece: uprights,
IOO
G, and detachable top, A, ail substantially arranged and constructed and combined as shown and described.
2. A frame for ironing-boards comprising a connecting-piece, B, having two pivoted supports, C, and C2, and notches in the ends cut with a bevel toward the center of the ironing-board, combined With the legs having the uprights G, and cross-pieces D, said crosspieces being provided with two grooves D2 and D3 cut to it the notches in the connecting-piece, al1 substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a folding ironing-board the combination of a removable top, A, With cross-legs, E, l5 at each end, a connecting-piece, B, uprights, G, connecting-pieces D, and F, supports, C, and O2, the connecting-piece being provided with the notches B2 and the cross-pieces D, being provided with 'the grooves D2, D3, all substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY MAJORS.
