Description
No. 732,614. PATBNTED JUNE so, 1903'.
"A. T. BINKERR, PLUMB, RULE, AND- LEVER, APPLICATION FILER Mm. 9', 1903,
.10 MODEL.
I r 641020914! Y UNITED STATES Patented une .30,
PATENT OFFI Ea PLUMB, RULE, AND LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,614, dated J une 30, 1903.
application filed March 9, 1903.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON THOMAS BIN- KERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Plumbs, Rules, and Levels;"and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in plumbs, rules, and spirit levels; and its object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object is to provide an adjustable spirit-level which may be easily and quickly applied to and detached from the stock.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front eleva-' tion of, my improved plumb, rule, and spirit level. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of one of the spirit-levels. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views through the same, taken on the lines 3 3 and 4 4 of Fig. 2. V
Referringmore particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the stock or body of the device, which is provided with the opening 2, adjacent to its upper end, and'with a similar opening 3 at its center. These openings are adapted to contain my adjustable spiritlevels and are formed with countersunk ends 4:, upon which the adjustable plates 5 are pivoted by the screws 6. Each of these plates is formed with an elongated aperture or slot 7, through which a screw 8 passes in order to bind the plate upon the countersunk portion 4 of the opening, and thus hold the plate in an adjusted position.
The spirit vials or bulbs 9 are cemented or otherwise secured in the holders 10, each of which is constructed of a rectangular blank having a portion curved upon itself to form a tubular socket 11 to receive the vial or bulb. The straight portion of the holder forms a Serial No. 146,962. (No model.)
base, which is pivoted to the plate 5 by the screw 12 and is made adjustable upon said plate 5 by providing it with the elongated aperture or slot 13, through which the'screw '14is adapted to pass to clamp the base of the holder upon the plate.
It will be observed that the pivots of the plates 5 and the bases of the vial-holders 10 are upon opposite ends of the plates, thereby permitting of a very quick and simple adjustment of the vial by the loosening of one or the other of the screws 8 and 14, as may be necessary to elevate or depress-either end of 7 stock and that the same may be quickly applied to and adjusted upon any piece of lumber or other material with a straight edge, thereby forming a very inexpensive plumb, rule, and level. q From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. The combination of a stock, a plate pivoted at one end to said stockand formed at its opposite end with an apertu're,a clamp ing-screw in said aperture for adjusting said plate upon the stock, a vial, a holder therefor having a base pivoted at one end to the free or adjustable end of the said plate and provided with an aperture atitsopposite end, and a clamping-screwin said aperture for adjusting said base upon the plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a stock, a rectangular plate pivoted at one end to said stock and formed at its opposite end with an aperture, a clam ping-screw in said aperture for adjustingsaid plate upon the stock, a vial, a holder formed with a tubular portion to receive said vial and with a straight portion or base, said base being pivoted at one end to the free or adjustable end of the said plate, and being provided with an aperture at its opposite end, and a clamping-screw in said aperture for adjusting said base upon the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AARON THOMAS BINKERD.
