WELLINGTON OVENS, OF SILVERTON, COLORADO.
ATTACHMENT FOR SPIRIT-LEVELS.
SPECIFICATION forming' part Of Letters Patent NO. 711,889, dated October 21, 1902.
Application led May 23, 1902. Serial No. 108,721. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WELLINGTON OvENs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Silverton, in the county of San Juan and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Spirit-Levels; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. p
My invention relates to an improved attachment for spirit-levels; and it consists of a device attached to one end of the level-bar and adapted to be adjusted to measure the inclination of a surface as compared with the horizontal or vertical.
My object is to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable, and efficient in use 5 and to these ends the invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will'be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spirit-level provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a spirit-level provided with my irnprovements.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the bar of the ordinary spirit-level, to one end of which, as shown in the drawings, is attached a plate 6 by means of screws 7. To this plate a bracket 9 is made fast by means of a thumb-screw 8. The bracket is also provided with a lug 10d, which enters a socket formed in the plate 6. In the sides of this bracket are formed ways in which a plate 10 is slidable. The central portion of the plate is cut out to make room for the thumb-screw S and to permit the plate to slide vertically orvat right angles to the length of the bar 5. The top of the plate 10 projects outwardly, as shown at 10, and this projection is provided with a threaded opening to receive an adjusting-screw 12, which is j ournaled in the outwardly-projecting top part 9 of the bracket. This screw is provided with a milled head 12, which forms a shoulder engaging the bracket above, while a collar 13 is made fast to the screw immediately below the bracket part 9a, w-hereby the screw is prevented from traveling in either direction.
From the construction and arrangement described it is evident that as the screw 12 is turned the plate 10 may be moved up and down at will. The lower part 10c of the plate is graduated to enable the user to determine the exact degree of the inclination of an'y surface considered with reference to either a vertical or horizontal plane.
It is evident that the 4details of construction as herein described may be varied at pleasure. lf the bar 5 is made of metal, the plate 6 maybe dispensed with and the bracket-plate 9 secured directly to the end of the bar. As shown in the drawings, the top of the head 12a of the adj usting-screw is in the same plane with the upper edge or top of the plate 6. For small or narrow levels the plate 6 may be made shorter, while the other parts may be made of uniform size. In this event the head 12a of the screw will project above the top or upper longitudinal edge ofthe level.
When in use, the level is placed upon the surface, and if the bubble of the glass tube 14 for horizontal surfaces or of the tube 15 for vertical surfaces indicates an inclination the screw 12 is turned to project the plate 10 below or beyond the edge 5 of the instrument, which edge for the purposes of this specification will be termed the lower edge, while the opposite edge is for convenience termed the upper edge. The graduated part l0c of the slidable plate should be projected until the bubble indicates that the bar 5 is either horizontal or vertical, as desired.
The degree of the projection will be indicated IOO bracket to the bar, a plate slidable in the ways of the bracket, said plate being cut out in the center to make room for the set-screw, the plate being provided with a projection at the top extending at right angles to the body of the plate and provided with a threaded opening, the bracket having a top projection located above the projection of the plate, and an adj listing-screw journaled in the bracket projection and threaded in the projection of the slidable plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a level of the class described, of a plate attached to one end thereof, a bracket provided with a lug adapted to enter an opening in the stationary plate, the bracket also having a threaded opening registering with the threaded opening in the plate, the bracket having a projection eX- tending outwardly from its top and being provided with side projections in which are formed Ways open at the bottom, a plate slidable in the Ways bf the bracket and having a right-angular projection atl its top, said projection being provided with a threaded opening, the central portion of the slidable plate being cut away, an adjusting-screw journaled in the bracket projection and threaded in the projection of the slidable plate, and a set-screw engaging the threaded openings of the bracket and stationary plate to hold the bracket in place, substantially as described. l
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
