Be it known that I, CHARLES J.' REHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. i I

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved mechanical toy; and to this end the present invention consists of a new and improvedtoy and in the construction and combination of parts, all as fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an application of my invention, Figure 1 is an elevational view; Fig. 2, a plan view; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view taken on line I I of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4V an enlarged detail vlew.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a hollow base portion, preferably circular in form and containing a music-box 2 of any preferred construction. Suitably attached to the base is a centrally-disposed post 3, having a rotatable disk or support 4 mounted thereon. Disk 4 is formed with beveled gear-teeth 5, which are arranged to mesh with a gear 6, mounted on an end of a shaft 7. Shaft 7 has its bearings in a pillow-block 8, and,as illus, trated, is turned by crank-arm 9. It is evident that other suitable meansv may be employed for revolving disk.4 from the exact means shown.V The top 10 of the hollow basel portion 1 preferably comprises two parts 11v and 11u of such form that when the parts are assembled a cam-shaped or irregular slot 12 will be formed in the top. This irregular'slot 12 is particularly shown in Fig. 2. Attached to the disk 4 and extending upwardly through the slot 12 are a number of bentV rods 13. Loosely mounted on portion 13a of each rod is a figure or puppet 14. In the drawings I have shown five rods 13, each rod being designed to carry one or more puppets 14. In manufacturing my toy, however, the number of rods' and figures may Vary. Extending fromk the base portion to a glass top 15 I employ a series of mirrors 16, preferably disposed at the angles shown and suitably fitted into an inc-losing casing 17. The figures 14, which are loosely mounted on the portions 13a of rods 13, are moved with the disk 4, the portions 13?L traveling in and guided by the irregular slot 12. The figures are viewed through holes formed in the casing, as shown at 18. Over the glass top l5 I preferably employ a removable dome 19, adapted for receiving a candle or an electric-light bulb for the purpose of brilliantly illuminating the interior of the toy. It will be understood that as the figures are revolved the illusion is such that they will appear to be greatly multiplied in numbers, and as the figures are dressed in bright colors -the effect' is very pleasing and interesting.

The music-box 2 is operated by means of a small gear 20, arranged to mesh with the teeth on the disk 4. Access to the interior of the toy is obtained through a door 22, suspended on hinges 23.

A mechanical toy comprising, a casing, a series of mirrors within the casing, a rotatable disk, a series of bent rods loosely mounted on the disk, a series of figures carried by the rods and arranged to travel on an endless irregular path,and means for moving the disk, substantially as set forth.

2. A mechanical toy comprising, a casing,

a hollow base, a series of mirrors within the casing, a rotatable disk within `the hollow base, an endless irregular or cam-shaped slot in the top of the base portion, bent rods attached to the disk and extending through the slot, figures mounted on said rods, and means for moving the disk, substantially as set forth. 3. A mechanical toy comprising, a casing, a hollow base, a series of mirrorswithin the casing, a rotatable disk Within the hollow base, a series of iigures loosely mounted on bent rods, said rods loosely mounted on the disk and arranged to follow an endless camshaped slot in the top of the base portion, and means for moving the disk, substantially as set forth.
