PATENT ()FFICE.
LEANDER M. CRAUN AND CHARLES M. HARRIS, OF EDGERTON, OHIO.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,051, dated June 30, 1903. Application filed January 28,1903. Serial No. 140,864. (to model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known thatwe,LEANDERM.CRAUN and CHARLES M. HARRIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Edgerton, in the county of Williams, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys;
and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to toys for children; and it has for its objectto provide an article of this nature which will be operated by the wind to rotate certain parts and therefrom to sound a bell, a further object of the invention being to provide an article which may be manufactured at a low price and which will aiford considerable amusement to the child.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the present toy comprises a frame including the arms 5 and 6, which for portions of their lengths diverge and the remaining portions of which lie parallel and are connected at their free end portions by the transverse bar or brace 7. At the opposite end of the frame from the brace 7 is a handle 8, and in axial alinement with this handle and projecting into the inclosure of the frame is a support 9, at the extremity of which is mounted a gong 10. Upon the relatively parallel portions of one of the arms of the frame is secured a bearing in which is mounted a shaft 11, at the forward end of which, beyond the frame, is fixed a wind-wheel 12, while the opposite end of the shaft, which projects from the bearing, has a crank 13,which acts as a striker. Parallel with that portion of the arm which carries the bearing above described and secured to the relatively convergent portion of said arm and to the brace 7 is a supporting-bar 14., upon which is pivotally mounted a lever 15, having at one end a hammer 16, disposed to strike the gong, while the opposite end of the lever beyond its pivotal point projects into the path of movement of the crank or striker 13, so' that as the wind-wheel'is rotated the crank or striker engages the lever and moves it to raise the hammer from the gong and then passes from the end of the lever to release the latter and permit it to fall and strike the hammer against the gong. Upon the opposite arm of the frame and at the extremity thereof is mounted a second windwheel 17 in the same plane with the first-named wind-wheel. i
To operate the toy, the handle is grasped and the toy is moved rapidly through the air after the manner of the ordinary pin-wheel, so that both wind-wheels are rapidly rotated, the rotation of one of the wheels acting to sound the gong in the manner above described.
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- ,A'toycomprising a frame including spaced arms and a connecting-brace, a handle for the frame, a support within the frame, a gong upon the support, a supporting-rod attached to the frame and the brace, a lever pivoted upon the supporting-rod and having a ham mer at one end for engagement with the gong, a striker-shaft rotatably mounted upon the frame for engagement with and operation of the lever, and a wind-wheel secured upon the striker-shaft.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
