DAVID T. ALLEN, OF MAPLELAKE, MINNESOTA.
BELT-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 732,030, dated June 30, 1903.- Application filed September 10,1902. Serial No. 122,864. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID T. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maplelake, in the county of Wright and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Punches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in belt-punches; and the main objects of the invention are, first, to provide a belt-punch of the lever-operated class with a gap deep enough to receive the end of any ordinary working belt so far into it that the holes for the lace may be punched the required distance from the end of the belt and still have the fulcrum of the levers so near the punch proper that the punch may be operated with great ease even on heavy belting second, to provide a belt-punch with means indicating how far from the end of the belt the holes are being punched; third, to make such punch as light and neat and compact as possible; fourth, to make such punch in a cheap manner of construction. These and other objects I attain by the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of my complete beltpunch. Fig. 2 is a top View of the main lever A in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the secondary lever B in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top view, and Fig. 5 a side view, of the arm 0 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by letters of reference, it will be seen that the punch is to some extent constructed on the principle of a pair of tongs, having its two levers A and B fulcrumed on the pivot D,which pass through the crossing-point, so that the long arms of the lovers form handles adapted to be grasped and forced together with one hand, while the short front ends of the levers are provided one with a belt-punch or punching-tube E and the other one, F, supports the front end G of a Vertically-swinging arm 0, which is a cushion P, of soft metal, preferably copper,
to prevent the punch E from getting dull when penetrating the belt; Said cushion I prefer to secure on the arm by giving it a.
stem Q, which fits tightly in the aperture R of the arm, so that when thecushionisworn out it may be removed by inserting a nail or like object upwardly through the aperture and then put in a new cushion.
Adjacent the gap or mouth G of the punch I provide upon one side of the main or primary jaw a scale indicating various distances from the center of the punch proper. In the presentinstance the scale has only four marks, with 1- 1, 13;, and 111; at the ends of the marks to indicate in inches the distances the lacing-holes are punched from the end of the belt; but it is evident that this scale may be varied bothas to arrangement and length.
In my preferred construction of this device I make the lever A with a slot S extending as far as possible throughout it. In this slot I place the thinner lever B, whichis, however, enlarged at its upper edge by the side ribs T to make it more adapted to the pressing of the hand on it. This construction lends stiffness to the lovers with a minimum of metal in them.
While the lever A may be cast with the slot S cored out, I prefer to produce the slot S and the spring-pocket J by casting the lever A in halves separable at the line art in Fig. 2 and secured together by the rivets U V W, passed through the two halvesand the intermediate supports X Y Z, formed upon one of them. I
In the operation of the devicethe belt is placed, like N, with the end to the desired mark of the scale, and as the levers A B are squeezed together the punchings of the belt pass upward and out at E The center of the pivot H should properly be placed slightly below a horizontal line across the face of the punch, so that whatever little curve the cushion may make is minimized by being divided above and below a horizontal line.
It will be understood that the main advanof the gap G which it is necessary to have quite deep in order to reach with the punch E to the desired parts of the large belts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A belt-punch comprising a primary' and a secondary lever pivoted together at their crossing, a punching-tube secured in the front end of one of the levers, a cushioned member adapted to move to and from the face of the punch, the front end of the secondary lever being arranged so as to force the cushioned member toward the face of the punch, and a spring tending to depress the cushioned member away from the punch, said primary lever having the gap or notch Gr forming a mouth for the end or edge of the belt operated on,said mouth extending rearwardly aboveand beyond the pivot at the crossing of the levers.
2. In a belt-punch, the combination with a primary and a secondary lever crossing each other and being pivoted at their crossing, a punching-tube secured in the front end' of the primary jaw, said primary jaw having a belt mouth or gap extending rearwardly above and beyond the pivoted joint, the downwardly spring-pressed swinging arm 0, pivoted rearward of the gap and resting normally upon two points of the secondary jaw, one forward and one rearward of the pivot at the crossing, of a soft metallic cushion on said swinging arm opposite the punching-tube.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, the combination in a belt-punch of a primary lever slotted almost throughout its entire length, a secondary thin lever pivoted in said slot and having the side ribs '1 upon its longer arm, the cushioncarrying spring-pressed arm 0 pivoted in said slot and supported by the front end of the secondary lever, and a punching-tube secured in the front end of the primary lever.
4. As an improved article of manufacture, the combination in a belt-punch of a primary lever slotted almost throughout its entire length, a. secondary thin lever pivoted in said slot and having the side ribs T upon its longer arm, the cushion-carrying spring-pressed arm 0 pivoted in said slot and supported by the front end of the secondary lever, and a punching-tube secured in the front end of the primary lever; said slot in the primary lever'be ing formed by making the lever in two halves and securing it together withinterveningsupports.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID T. ALLEN.
