Description
H. F. CRAFTS & w. UPDEGRAFF.
Machine for Removing Rivets from Belting.
NO. 131,152. Patented Sep.10,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
"HIRAM F. CRAFTS AND WILLIAM UPDEGRAFF, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PA.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,152, dated September 10,1872.
SPEcmIcATIoN.
` To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HIRAM F. CRAFTS, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, and WM. UPDEGRAFF, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine for Removing Rivets from Belting, Sto.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is specially designed for use in removing rivets from belting, but it may be employed, if desired, for punching holes in metallic plates; and consists in the combination of a hinged tongue and base-plate, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation of our improved device, Fig. 2, a
sectional el, vation 3 and Fig. 3, a partial plan' view of the base-plate reversed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now proceed to describe fully'its construction and operation.
A represents the base-plate, constructed of any proper material, and provided, preferably, with opening a, shoulder al, and handle a2; also, with recess a3 upon its lower side, provided with an opening, a4, as shown. B represents a tongue hinged in any suitable manner to the shoulder al, the free end of which is provided with an opening in line over the opening a in the base-plate below. C represents the punch.
The operation is as follows: The beltin g from which the rivets are to be removed is placedv between the tongue and the base-plate with one of its rivets in line with the openings through them. The end ofthe punch, having been placed in position in the opening in the tongue, may then be forcibly driven downward, by which means the rivet will -be forced out of the belting and fall into the recess below the base-plate. By the hinging ofthe tongue the machine is adapted to receive any thick` ness of belting. By means of the opening in the recess the rivets, when detached, are enabled to pass out from the recess.
If desired, the machine may be used for punching holes in metallic plates. By means of this machine the punch is guided into proper position, and is supported squarely uponthe point of the rivet or upon the plate, and is thus caused to operate easily and accurately. The base of the machine is, preferably, made of cast-iron and the tongue and punch of steel.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the hinged tongue with the base-plate, or its equivalent, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 4th day of April, 187 2.
HIRAM F. CRAFTS. VILLIAM UPDEGRAFF.
