Description
Patented oct. 1o, 1871.,

, fan Mj//p @www .NITED STA'rEe HENRY BOLTHOFF, OE CENTRAL CITY, COLORADO TERRITORY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,737, dated October 10, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BoL'rHoFF, of Central City, in the county of Gilpin and Territory of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Stencil-Cutter; and I dol hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side view, partly in section, of my improved stencil-cutter. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in an improvement upon the construction of stocks for stencil-cutters, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawing represents the block or body of my improved stencil-cutter. It is made of brass or other suitable material, cast of rectangular or other form and suitable size. B is the cutter. It is made of cast-steel or equivalent material, and so formed as to produce the aperture for the desired letter or mark when applied to the material to be cut. The cutter is affixed to the plate by fitting its upper part in to the mold wherein the plate is cast, so that eventually the two will be rmly united by casting. In this manner the cutter is cheaply made o1" best material, it being unnecessary and too expensive to use steel for the body A, while the blade must be made of the hard substance. From the plate A projects a tenon, a, of cylindrical or other form, into a corresponding socket of the handle C. Vithin the handle is, at the side of the socket, a clamping-spring, b, which serves to retain the block in place. The block is also perforated, as at c o, over each mark or letter, in order to facilitate the removal of the cut-out pieces.
In using the cutter the block is secured in the handle, placed upon the article to be cut, and forced down by a hammer blow. The next cutter to be used is then readily substituted in the handle for the rst, placed in position, and applied by hammering.
The cutting-blades for every set of type are of equal length and height, in order to produce uniform letters. The width ofthe several blocks is preferably such that when the material is ruled into equal spaces and one block applied to the middle of each space the letters will all be equally far apart.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The brass plate A, having tenon a and perforations c c constructed, as described, to serve as a stock for cutters B and to iit handle C, as set forth.
Witnesses: HENRY BOLTHOFF.
JOSEPH S. UPDEGEAFF, LEwIs V. WILooX.
