Description

J. W. FARRELL. Die for Cutting Gan-Tops, 8L0.
No. 222,481. Patented Dec. 9, 1879.
N-PETERS, PHOTO-UTMOGRAPHER. WASHINIGTQN D C.
Urrrrrm STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. FARRELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMIENT IN DIES FOR CUTTING CAN-TOPS, 80G.
Specification forming art of Letters Patent No. 222,481, dated Decem r 1 7 ppli i filed R September 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. FARRELL, of
the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of .lPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dies for Cutting and Burring Tops and Bottoms of Sheet-Metal Cans, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are top and bottom views,
respectively, of apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section thereof in line as m, Fig. 1.
i Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
In apparatus for cutting or burring the tops thereof maybe displaced and replaced, and the joints at the corners of the plates are obviated.
Referrin g to the drawings, A represents the bottom die, having edging-plates a a, and B the top die, punch, or follower, having ed gin gplates 12 b.
The plate from which the top or bottom of a sheet-metal can is made is placed on the lower die, and the top die or punch descends, the action whereof for the purpose of cutting or burring the plate being well known. During this cutting or burring operation the edgingplates are subjected to severe strain and are liable to break. To remedy this I construct the side plates, a, and corner plates, to, of the lower die and side plates, 1), and corner plates, 11, of the upper die each of separate and removable matched pieces, whereby, when a plate is broken, it may be remoy'ed and a new plate supplied.
The corner pieces extend to the side pieces,
against which they abut away from the corners proper, so that joints at said corners are avoided, and the can tops and bottoms will be cut or burred smooth and uniform.
Furthermore, when the plates wear away, or are rough or irregular, they may be replaced by new and proper plates.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The upper and lower dies, each having removable matched side pieces and removable matched corner pieces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J. W. FARRELL.
