// 9 44 I age m. PETERS. Pmwumv a her. Washinglon, n c.
N rn TATES PATENT QFFICEO JAMES B. LYONS, OF MILTON, CONNECTICUT.-
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-WORKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,697, dated November 24, 1863.
. the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a plan or top view of the machine. Fig. 2 represents a side view or section through the tub and working partsa Fig. 3 shows a detached section or end view of the fluted roller, with its bearing in and slide to secure it in place in the vertical post, also the lugs and lever to operate or shake the hopper and the spring in red lines.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spirally-fluted conical roller, in combination with an inclined circular revolving table, in a stationary tub, and a perforated receptacle to receive and distribute a given quantity of salt.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe it more in detail, referring to the drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
A keeler or tub, A, of the ordinary construction may be used by securing a turned center post or standard, B, to the bottom by a substantial wood-screw, 2, it having a metal washer, w,ontheunderside,into whichthehead of the screw is fitted. At a suitable height from the bottom 0 of the tub, there is turned a shoulder, 12, on the standard B, on which is placed a revolving table, D, which is thick near the center, and turned so as to be gradually thinner at the periphery, thereby making an incline for the fluids to drain olf while the process of working the butter is going on. The circular table D is supported, near the outer edge, by three or more small frictionrollers, c 6, having their bearings in blocks E E, which are screwed to the side of the tub A. Uponone side of the tub A, I fasten a vertical post, F, it having a hole or recess, f,
in one edge, just above the top of the tub, which forms the journal-box for the spirallyfluted conical roller H near the crank h. The journal j at the inner end of the roller H has its bearing in the vertical standard B in the center of the tub. The roller H is secured in its bearing in the post. F by a slide, g, made to move up to let it be taken out for the purpose of washing and cleansing, and is firmly secured in its place when the slide 9 is down. Above the roller H is placed the trough or receptacle G, to receive the salt tobe distributed in the butter while in the process of working over. Thetrough G, I make with heads of hard wood, of a semicircular form, m and a, which are connected together by the covering 0 0, which may be made of perforated tin or wiregauze or any other material which will admit fine salt to be liberated or sifted through onto the roller H, which will effectually distribute it in the butter being worked. The trough G is hung upon pivots Z l at the ends to the post F and the standard B in such a manner that it can easily be removed and replaced The salt-receiver G is put in motion or made to vibrate by an arm, q, extending down from the head a, which comes in contact with a se-' ries of projections or pins, 45 t i, on the outer end of the spirally-fluted roller H, and a spring, r, attached to the post F, passing between two pins, t t, keeps the hopper or trough G right side up and allows the crank to be turned in either direction, the operation being the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
The construction and arrangement of a spirally-fluted conical roller, in combination with an inclined circular revolving table placed in a tub, together with a perforated receptacle to distribute a given quantity of salt in the manner herein described, for the purposes specified.
