SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,545, dated February 27, 1894.

Be it known that LJULIUS W. FLOWERS, av citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newport, in the county of Lincoln and State of Oregon,have inventedcertain newand useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will pertains to make and use the'same.
This invention relates to an adjustable vise, and has for its object to provide simple and effective means for regulating the device to various sizes and adapting the same for different usesby means of quickly operating mechanism which can be easily and readily lilith theseand other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fullyhereinafter described and claimed.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts of the several gures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a stationary jaw which has its lower end securely fastened to the bench and` is bifurcated as at2 at the lower portion thereof and formed with a slot 3 at the upper part thereof adjacent to the jaw or head 4 of the saine. Through the lower bifurcated portion of the jaw 1 extends a lower har 5 which is pivotally connected by a pin 6 through the said jaw l at the extreme lower portion thereof to allow a slight play, and said bar is also formed with a series of openings 7 whereby it may be adjusted longitudinally in the said jaw l by removing the pin 6 to permitan adjustment of the parts of the vise in this direction. The upper part of the said bar 5 carries a tube S and adjacent to said tube is an upward extension 9 carrying two sets of hinge lugs 10 to the uppermost of which is pivotally connected the end of an operating lever 11 and to the lowermost is pivotally attached a fulcrum bar 12 which is secured to the lever 11 by a short link 13 in a pivotal manner.
Pivotally attachedto the opposite end of the fulcrum bar 12 is a link 14 which is also secured in a pivotal manner to an operating block 15 having att-ached thereto the lower end of a second jaw 16. The second jaw 16 is free to move to and from the jaw 1 and is also formed `with a lower bifurcation 17 and an upper slot 1S adjacent to its head 19. The
operating lever 11, together with the link 14 and the block 15 extends through the lower bifurcated portions of the jaws 1 and 16, and the said block 15 is movable over the bar 5 and is formed with a short tube 2O in which is secured one end of a coiled spring 2l whose opposite end is secured in the tube 8 and as shown in Fig. 2 when the jaws are released to separate the said tube 20 moves toward the said tube 8 and it closes the coiled spring 21. The free end of the lever 11 is provided with a loop 22 by which it is operated and when said lever is depressed as shown in Fig. 2 the fnlcrum bar 14 is arranged longitudinally parallel or in alignment with the fulcrum bar 12 to thereby force the lower end of the jaw 16 outwardly and bring the head thereof more closely to the head of the jaw 1. This mechanism serves as a primary adjustmentfor the jaw 16 and to complete the securing action ot' the heads of the said jaws a positive secondary adjustment is employed which consists of a bar 23 which passes through the slots in the upper portions of the jaws 1 and 16 and on one side is recessed or notched as at 24: for engagement with a catch lever 25 having a nose 26 adapted to take into said recess a fulcrum on the adjacent portion of the jaw 1. This catch lever is spring actuated and is provided with a handle as fully shown whereby it may be disengaged from a holding position. A bar 23 adjacent to one end is slottedas at 27 and therein is mounted a clamping lever 28 which has a portion thereof passing through the slot in the said bar and adapted to bear against the outer adjacent portion of the jaw 16 to clamp the head thereof against the head of the jaw 1. The clamping lever set forth ser-ves as a regulator to always hold the vise in readiness for use and the catch lever holds the bar 23 against IOG accidental disengagement and also serves to retainfthe requisite adjustment which is made when the lever 1l is in raised position as shown in Fig. l and when the said lever l1 is lowered a clamping action of the jaw heads is produced against the article to be held, by a quick and ready operation. By placing the lower spring in tubes, dust and chips are prevented from injuring the same or interfering with the proper action thereof.
It will be seen that the device can be adjusted to accommodate various widths by simple and efficient means and it after the primary adjustment is made through the lever 1l it is still desired to press the piece of Wood or other article still tighter in the jaws of the vise, the clampinglever or regulator is operated to' produce this additional pressure as it will be seen that the said regulator can at all times be employed to increase or decrease the pressure asmay be desired. The opening or loop in the free end of the lever ll is adapted to be engaged by the foot of the operator for convenience andfacility in operating the said lever. Of course it will be understood that the jaws and other parts of the devicemay be made of any suitable material in accordance withthe use desired and in making the adj ustment of the several parts it will be understood that after the parts are regulated to a certain width they will remain in such adjustment until further changed thereby making it exceptionally convenient in holding a series of boards or other devices of a uniform thickness.
It will be obviously apparent that many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention,what is claimed as new isl. In a vise, the combination of a stationary jaw, a movable jaw, an adjusting bar extending through the upper portions of said jaws, a clamping lever or regulator attached to said bar and adapted to engage the outer upper portion of the movable jaw, and ablock or shoe attached to the lower portion of the movable jaw, a spring connected to said block or shoe, an operatinglever and alink between said operating lever and the block or shoe, substantially as described.
2. In a vise, the combination of a stationary jaw, a bar movable and adjustable attached to said stationary jaw, a carrying tube on said bar, an operating leverpivotally connected to the upper portion of said bar, afulcrum lever also pivotally attached to the rear portion of said bar and connectedl to the lever by a link, a movable jaw adjacent to said stationary jaw, a block or shoe attached to said movable jaw and having a spring secured in a tubular portion thereof, the opposite end of said springbeing connected within the tube of the aforesaid bar, a link connecting the fulcrum bar with the shoe, and an upper secondary adjustment for the jaws, substantially as described.
