SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,526, dated March 3, 1891. Application flied .l'uly 26, 1890. Serial No. 359,973. (No model.)
To all whom t may'corwern.-
Be itknown that we, GERHARD P. Puso HKE and HEINRICH BRUECKEL, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Ilfisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to clamps for holding separate parts of picture-frames and other structures together while being glued; and our invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrange-` ment as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l isa view in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section of a clamp constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, partly in transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig; l. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fixed arm and a horizontal crosssection on the line 3 3 of Fig. 6. Fig. 4 is a plan View and partial horizontal section of our improved clamp, the section being taken on the line 4 4i of Fig. l. Fig. is a detached view inside elevation of the detachable pivot-plate for the cam-lever. Fig. G is an inner side elevation of the upper part of therigid arm of the clamp.
The objects of our invention are to' provide a clamp of simple and durable form, the clamping-surfaces of which shall automatically adjust themselves to inequalities in the parts of the structure being clamped, and the clamping-lever, of whichshalloperatestrongly and not be liable to dislocation from its clamping position by reason of blows or knocks either upon the clamp or upon the work being clamped. These objects we attain by virtue of the construction which we will now proceed to describe.
In the said drawings, A designates the main bar of our improved clamp, said bar being of L shape and the longer arm A being serrated longitudinally upon its upper edge, substantially as shown at a. The upper end of the shorter arm A2 of this bar is formed with a lower transverse rib or shoulder b, an upper transverse rib or shoulder o', and an intermediate transverse rib or shoulder h2, said ribs or shoulders being all upon the same side of the arm A2 and being also parallel .with each other. An arm C extends outwardly at right angles from the upper end of said arm A2 of bar A, and the outer end of this arm is formed with an eye c to receivea pivot-studd of a cam-lever D, to be hereinafter more fully described.
F designates a detachable pivot-plate, which is of substantially square form and which is provided with a lateral arm or extension f, having an eye f in its outer end, which, when the pivot-plate is in operative position, coincides with the eye c, before referred to, and receives a pivot-stud d of the cam-lever D, said stud extending oppositely from the stud el, previously mentioned. The pivot-plate F is attached removably to the upper end of the arm A2, and between the ribs b b of the same by a screw g, ribs f2f3 of the plate F resting, respectively, upon the ribs or shoulders b h.
In order to prevent slipping or accidental displacement of the pivot-plate F, itis provided with a lug f adjacent to its rib f3, and the upper rib b is formed with a recess b3 to receive said lugft H designates an elongated clamping-rod which works between the ribs b b2 as guides. The inner end of this clamping-rod is formed with a spherical head 7i, which enters a corresponding socket t', formed in the back of a Y clamping-head I. The margin of this socket is preferably slitted or cutout to form fingers i', as best shown in Fig. 4, and which fingers are bent inwardly to embrace the spherical head h, and a friction-ring j is interposed between said inwardly-bent fingers and saidy head, so as to stilfen the connection with the spherical head sufficiently to prevent the clamping -head from dropping downward while permitting it to vary its position to accord with variations of the surfaces to be clamped. The opposite end of the rod H is formed with a longitudinal loop h', which einbraces the stud d of the cam-lever D. The extreme outer end of the rod II beyond the outer margin of this loop is formed with two studs h2 h2, which embrace a lateral marginal rib d2 of the cam-head D. This cam-head is of substantially ovoid form, and the rib d2 is consequently of like form, there being an in- IOO end of the said arm A?.

K designates the movable jaw of the clam p, this jaw being provided at its outer or upper end with bifurcations having a transverse rccess in one edge thereof, (to receive a crosspin 7o', hereinafter named,) and the said jaw is further provided at its inner or lower end with an eye or loop 7.1 to embrace the outer end of the arm A. The upper surface ot' this eye or loop is downwardly and outwardly inclined, so as to operate at its edge K as a tooth to engage the serrations d. The upper end of this jaw K is provided with a cross-pin 7u', which is embraced by the converging ends ot' two studs met a clamping-head L. Shoulders 7a2 7.'.3 are formed on the bifurcated end ot' the jaw K above and below the pin 7a', so as to limit the pivotal movement of the clamping-head L upon the pin. In order to retain the movable jaw upon the bar A', a detachable head N is attached to the outer end ot' the bar by rivets n, as shown.

In use the arm A is vertical, with the arm A2 projecting horizontally above the movable jaw K, the head N keeping the movable jaw K from accidentally dropping ott the lower The wood or other material being operated upon is clamped between the clam ping-heads l and L.
lleretofore clamps analogous in many respects to ours have been made wherein the elampingrod which was operated by the camlevcr was connected to the cam-rib at a point between the pivot of the Cain-head and the clamping-head on said rod. The consequence of this construction was that when in use any pounding upon the wood or other material held by the clamp would serve to loosen the hold ot' the said rod on the said rib and allow the cam-lever to slide and drop, thereby unclamping the material; but with our construction this point of contact betwecnthe clamping-rod and the cam-rib is at the extreme outer end of said rod, (which is the extreme upper end thereof in use,) and therefore the contact ot the parts Il 7L`- 71,2 with the rib (Z2 will not be disturbed by such pounding and the material will always remain tightly clamped until the cain-lcver D is voluntarily moved.
By reason of making the described retaining-head N detachable it can be removed, in the event of the jaw K becoming broken or injured, for the replacing of a new jaw, and then the head N can be restored to place, as before.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a clamp, the combination of an angular clamping-bar, with a movable jaw at one end carrying a elamping-head and a clamping-rod sliding in the other end ot said bar and provided with a clamping-head at its lower or inner end and a loop at its upper or outer end, a eain-leverpivoted to said bar and having a stud projecting through the loop of said elamping-rod, and a marginal cam-track, the extreme outer or upper end of said clampingrod engaging with said canrtrack at a point between said stud and the outer end of the cam-lever, substantially as set forth.
9. In a clamp, the eombination,with an angular bar, of a movable jaw sliding on the same and having a bifurcated outer end and a transverse recess in one edge of said bifurcations, a pin located in said recess, and a elainpinghead provided with studs on its rcverse side passing between said bifurcations and st-raddling said pin and having eonverging ends bent around said pin, substantially as set forth.
