JOHN ALLEN ANT) CHARLES E. F. LEWIS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA,
Letters Patent No. 73,068, dated January 7, 1868; anteclated December 24, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEY FASTENINGS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY- CONCERN:
Be it known that we, JOHN ALLEN and CHARLES E. F. LEWIS, of the city of Washington, and Distrietof Columbia, have invented an Improved Holder for Chimneys for Lamps and Globes, and-we do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 a sectional view of the holder.
The nature of our invention consists in a circular and grooved holder, to receive the flanged base of a glass chimney, the holder being divided into segments, andopcrating on one or more hinges, and fastened by a clasp or catch; and the object is to prevent the chimneys from being broken or rattling loosely, -as usual, and moreteasily and firmly inserted in the top of the burner. v
A representsthe glass chimney; B, the ordinary brass burner, with its common cone C; D, the ordinary thumb-ratchet for raising or lowering the wick in the tube G is the circular grooved and adjustable holder, divided into two or more segments of a circle, that are grooved in the inside for the flange of the base of the chimney to fit in. One half circle, H, of the holder G, is made fast to the upper rim of the burner B, upon which the cone 0 rests, while the other half circle, G, is hinged K to the end of H,- and swings horizontally to the burner B, and when closed completes the circle and clasps the flange of the base of the chimney, holding it in the groove L; and the circular segments are fastened together by means of a screw, spring, or other device, to answer as a catch, M. A hinge, N, allows theholder to be opened upward and outward. These segments or groove-holders may be divided to open either horizontally or upward, and held by hinges, springs, or any kind of suitable fastening-s, and in the groove L we insert a ring of rubber or soft elastic material, that the flange of thebase of the chimney may be held securely yet safelytrom the effects of the expansion by heat.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The circular and grooved holder, divided into segment-s, operating on hinges, and held by i'asteni'ngs,
as herein described and forthe purposes set forth.
2. We also claim the use of an elasticor rubber ring, fitted into the groove of the holder, for the purpose set forth.
JOHN ALLEN, CHARLES E. F. LEWIS.
