Description
M. C HEPTINSTALL.
Lamp Extinguisher.
Patented 1m 29, 1869.
r h n 6 v m atent Gtjhline.
M. C. HEPTINSTALL, OF ENFIELD, NORTH CAROLINA.
Letters Patent No. 91,934, dated June 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTING-UISHERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, M. G. HEPTINSTALL, of Enfield, Halifax county, State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the outside of the burner, and
Figures 2 and 3 are vertical sections of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of the spring concave extinguishers and revolving thumb-shaft, with its wire yoke, for closing the extinguishers.
0 enable others to make and use my invention, 1 proceed to describe it as follows:
A represents a burner, as commonly used and attached to oil-lamps, with its perforations B, scalloped flange O, wick-tube D, conical top E, spring F, and ratchet G, for raising and lowering the wick, all wellknown devices, to which I have made the following improvements, vi'z:
In the side of the burner A, I make a slot, H, and on the inside of the burner, I place a circular plate, J', corresponding with the inside of the burner, and larger than the slot H, so as to act as a sliding door, 'to open or close the slot, the door J being moved back ori'orward by a small pin, K, fastened to the door, and projecting out side of the burner, so that by pushing against the ,pin, the door is opened or closed, when the lamp requires to be lighted, by inserting a ta per or lighted match through On each side of the wick-tube D are attached concave extinguishers L L, that are sidjustable, opening and closing at the-top of the wick-tube., They operate on upright springs M that are permanently fastened, at their lower 'ends, to the wick-tube D.
These upright springs M M are surrounded by a wire yoke, N, the ends of which are permanently fastened to a partially revolving thumb or wire shaft, P, extending through the. burner A, with a revolving head or button on the outside, to be turned by the thumb and finger, so as to raise or lower the yoke-N, which opens and closes the extinguisher L, by which means the extinguishers close against the top of the wick, instantly extinguishing the flame without incurring any risk of an explosion as in ordinary ways of extinguishing lamps.
Thus, by my invention, the lamp is lighted, or the light extinguished, without endangering the chimney or lamp.
I do not claim pivoted or hinged extinguishers, selfopening, when the lamp may a-ccidentally be overturned, as they have been used before; neither do I claim the same devices for extinguishing a lamp as patented by \V. A. Richardson and H. D. Wood, April 3, 1866, or the same as patented by J. \Vood, June 6, 1865; but I I \Vhat I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the spring concave extinguishers L L and revolving thumb-shaft P, with its wire yoke N, for closing the extinguishers, when constructed and operated as herein described.
