Description

c. w. CAHOON.
Lamp Burner.
Patented Dec. 115, 1868 t l 5 mm p I we CHARLES W. CAHOON, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 84,993,-dated December 15, 1868.
LAMP-BURNER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Gnnoon, of Portland, county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-B urners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, enabling others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying-drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the lamp-burner and section of the chimney.
Figure 2, another view of same, with. the chimney and deflector turned off from the; burner.
I am aware of certain patents of the United States npon lamp-burners, in which the chimney is held to the deflector by the deflectors fitting within the same, and made either with a spiral spring around the edge of the deflector, or else having the deflector so made as to be a spring within itself. Such I do not claim; but myiuvention has relation to an improvement therefor, by reason of which burners having chimneys held by deflectors, in the mannerdescribed, may be used in conjunction with a joint, upon which the chimney and its supports are turned ofi'from over the wick-tube.
Such an addition is of evident advantage, inasmuch as the chimneys above referred to cannot, with entire security as now constructed, be so used, having no sutficient device to hold them securely on the supports, if placed in the position shown in fig.- 2 though they might, in a' measure, answer for such apurpose.
It may be added, that such chimneys are not applied with such an object, but are simpl y intended to be moved or pulled 0E from the supports and from around the deflector, when it is desired to uncover the flame or wick-tube.
Such a method of operation is an obvious inconvenience for difiereut reasons, chief among'which are the heated condition of a chimney when having for a time rested over and around the flame, and, also, the comparatively insecure condition ofa chimney when merely held by the outward pressure of a metal deflector upon the smooth glass inner surface of the chimney.
Letters Patent of the United States are granted to me for a joint, in its connection, as therein set forth, with a lamp-burner, and I, therefore, do not claim such device, but a reference to the accompanying drawings will explain the nature of my present application.
' a shows a shoulder, constructed in a glass chimney, and extendingfeutirely around the inner periphery thereof.
b shows a deflector, of the description ah'eady alluded to, represented in this drawing, with a helical-wirespring inserted around its outer edge. (See 0.)
is the wick-tube; p e, the chimney-rests or supports; and
f, a perforated plate, to admit the requisite'air-current for creating combustion.
Other deflectors are made with slots in the material, radiating from the centre thereof, but the obj cat is similar to that of the one here shown, to wit, to form a spring to hold the chimney by outward pressure.
By the formation of-the shoulder a, it is evident that the chimney is firmly held in its union with the deflector b,-requiring some considerable force to separate them, more than the weight of the chimney.
The spring of the deflector expanding into or against the shoulder, affords a secure fastening, enabling these deflectors to be used with the additional convenience of the joint h. '(See fig. 2.) v
' The base of the chimney, as before intimated, rests at e.
The operation of placing the chimney is simply pressing it over the deflector till the base of the chimney rests at e,'when the spring of the deflector Willhave arrived at its position in the shoulder, recess, or groove 01.
The chimney can then beturned ofi",as illustrated at fig. 2, without danger of it falling from its support, or slurping from around the deflector. Burners, it is plain, may also be so constructed'as to hold a chimney by interior chimney-fasteniugs, and I desire to specify the application of my improvement to such.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a burner havin interior chim-' uey-fasteuiugs, with a horizontal joint, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Witnesses: CHAS. "V. CAHOON.
