THOMAS L. REE D, o F P-R OVIDE Ne E, RHODE ISLAND. Letters Patent 1Y0. 73,040, dated January 7, 1868; antedated December 26, 1867.
IMPRO EMENT IN GAS-SOCKETS,
TO ALL'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. REED, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Gas-Sockets for connecting a tube or pipe with ages-burner in a manner to form a gas-tight joint; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of" the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making. part of this specification, in which is represented a vertical section of my improved gas-socket placed upon agas burner inthe way of its use.
In the said drawings, 6 b are the shell of the socket, which is of cast metal generally, although it may bedrawn up from sheet metal by thewell-known process of drawing up such shapes. In the upper end of the shell :1. screw-thread is cut, by which the tube or pipe, for the conveyance of gas, is connected. The opposite end of the shell is turned upon the inside, to form a cylindrical cavity, and a shoulder at e c, for the reception of suitable packing n n, to form a gas-tight joint between the shell and the tapering form of the gas burnerf, the'said packing being held in the socket-shell by turning over the lower edge of the shell, so as't o from a sort of ledge or lip, i, by means of a burnisher, whilethe socket is revolving in a lathe, this edge of the shell being i turned elf thin for this purpose. The packing which I propose to use in a socket of.the construction described is leather, stuffed or saturated with melted tallow, or some similar material, and out into washers of an outside diameter to fit into the cylindrical cavity of the shell, and of such inside diameter as will receive and fit snugly upon thegas-burner intended tobe used. These washers, four or five in number, are cemented together by a cement made of isinglass, or any well-known substance suitable for cementing leather, and thus in combination form an elastic packing, which, being also cemented to the interior of the shell, is well adapted to forming a gas-tight joint when placed on a gas-burner.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The shell of the socket, constructed with a cylindrical cavity, and a shoulder, e, and a lip or ledge, i, as described, and in combination with the packing n, constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS L. REED.
