IMPROVEMENT IN WATCIMLIANS.
Specification formingl part of Letters Patent No. 52,@t9, dated Februaryv 27, 1666.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE HAs'rINGs, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Manufacture of Watch or Time-Piece Hands; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specitication and represented in the aeeompanyin drawings, of Which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 an underside view, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. et a side elevation, ot it. Fig. 5 is a seetion of a Watch-hand as constructed prior to my invention.
Before my invention it has been customary to make a Watch-hand of two separate pieces of metal, the finger b and the ring o being in one piece, and the tube or collar a. beingin another piece and soldered to the ring c. In making the part a, a cylinder ot' brass or other soft meta-l has been soldered to the part o, and afterward bored out and turned down, so as to convert it into a tube. This inode ot' i'nahing the hand has not only been vertv expensive, but is attended with a liability ot' the part a becoming` separated from the part e.
In making' my improved hand I strike up the Whole ot' itviz., the parts a c-from one piece of metal, by means ot dies suitabl)v made, thus causing the socket-tube a to be in one piece ot' metal with the ring' c and the iinger I), and to be perfectly united with the ring'.
I am aware that it is not new to give form to an article by means of dies, and therefore I do not claim the employment ot' dies for such purpose; nor do I claim a watch or time-piece hand as constructed with its socket-tube (l made ot' a separate piece ot metal and soldered to the ring' or head c oi" the finger I); but
What I do claim as niv invention, as I am the first to produce it as a nxerehantable artiele, is-
lhe hereinbefore-described improved manufacture ot' Watch or time-piece hand having' its socket-tube, its head, and linger i'oiinedin one piece ot' metal, substantiallv as set forth.
