HENRY E. VEIT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Loo's'E-LEAFBINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Ietters Eatent No.`729,979, dated-June 2, 1903.
Applieation filed July 23, 1901.V Serial Nh. 679,384'- (No model.)
binder of this character adjustable in thicki ness to suit the book contents and so ar- -ranged that the book will 'always open flat and remain openunweighted, said binder bei ingparticularly adapted to the heavy class of work suggested.
My invention is illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in"
which- Figure l represents a broken inner view, partly insection, of the closed end of the binder; and Fig. 2 a broken section takengas'- illustrated at line 2 of Fig. l.
In the preferred construction there are em-v ployed two separable cover sections, two
clamping'bars, having hinged connection at their rear .or lower edges with the rear or'A binding edges of said cover-sections, extensible binding-posts connecting said clampingbars, extensible end clamping-posts detachably connected with the ends of said clamp-A ing-bars, anda spring-equipped follower re movably confined between said clampingbars and serving to hold the booklcontents iirmly in place before the binder Ais filled'.
The preferred construction'is as follows: A'A4 represent cover-sections, the section A= being -provided at its hinged end with a tongue or extension a, which telescopes with a suitable pocket at the base or hinged end of the section A' in the manner shownin vmy existing" Patent No. 606,434, June 28,1898; B B', hollow metallic clamping-barsrsecured by hinges h' to the rear or binding portions of the sections A A; B2, telescopic bindingposts, the-large or tubular portions of which are carried by the vbar B and the smaller portions of which are carried by the bar B; C C, spring-equipped followers confined between the bars B B' and serving to hold the sheets c firmly against one of said clamping-bars, and D detachable end binding posts connected with the ends of the clamping-bars 'B B. rihe hinges b are firmly secured to the cover-section A A' by rivets b', which pass through perforations in'the hinged leaves h? and cverfsections A A', and to the rear side portions of the clam ping-bars B B by brazing or 'otherwise securing thereto the hinged leaves b3. The followers C comprise bars or` members d, connected by extensible posts d', about which are coiled springs d2, and connected also by a chain d3, which limits their separation. AsillustratedinFig.2,the members d are cut away atthe points d4 at their extremities torpermit them to receive the posts B2. The end postsD comprise, prefer-v ably, telescopically-connected members f ff. The member f comprises a tubular portion f2, a hollow .bar-form part fparallel and adjacentthereto', an arm f4 at rghtangles t0 the `partsf2f3 and which serves to enter the h ollow bar B, anda iiatspring f5, secured to the part f4 at -its inner endand having near its outer end a perforation which receives a point f, with which the adjacent inner wall of the hollow bar B is provided. The part f comprisesa post f7, a parallel bar f5, an arm f9 at right angles thereto, and a spring f1, provided with a'perforation receivingia stud f on the adjacentinner-wallof the clamping-bar B'. The parts f lfs'move telescopically in the parts f2 f3 and are adj ustably connected therewith bya set-screwf12. AAny suitable means may be provided, if desired, to prevent the part f frombecomin g entirely separated from the part f. Y
-In Fig. 2 I have shown the leaves c provided at their rear edges with notches, recesses, or perforations" g for receiving the posts B2 andv at their top and bottom edges with notches g'i'or receiving the members f8 ofthe end posts D.; 1
lThe operation-will be readily understood from the foregoingdescription. The parts of vthe binder being assembled substantially as shown in Fig. l, but vwith the follower C removed, any desired number rof sheets may be placed in the binder/the' thickness'of the book being regulated by the screws fm. When the desired number of sheets are in place, assuming the binder not to be filled, the follower C may be pressed into place to iirmly press the sheets against one of the clampingbars of the binder. When the binder is filled, the follower is of course no longer in use. As will be readily understood from the sectional portion of Fig. 1 the end binding-posts B may be readily removed from the clamping-bars, to which they are secured,by pressing the springsjifo together by means of the thumb and finger to disengage ther perforations of said springs from the studsffu. This permits the leaves to be readily removed. When it is desired to increase the capacity of the binder, the screws fm may be loosened and the binder-sections separated, the telescopic connection of the tongue ci. with one of the cover-sections permitting this action.
The leaves c may be of card board and have suitable recesses for receivingr pictures when the binder is to be used as an album.
Changes in details of construction within the spirit ot' my invention may be made. Hence no limitation is to be understood from the foregoing detailed description except as shall appear from the appended claims.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a binder of the character described, the combination of two suitable cover-sections, two clamping-bars pivotally connected with the rear edges thereof, and extensible end binding-posts detachably connected with 'the ends of both said clamping-bars.
:5. In a binder of the character described,
vthe combination of two suitable cover-sections, two clam ping-bars hinged to said coversections, extensible intermediate bindingposts con nected with said clam ping-bars, and extensible end binding-posts detachably connected with both said clamping-bars.
3. In a binder of the character described, the combination of two suitable cover-sec tions, two clamping-bars hinged thereto and having hollow ends, and extensible bindingposts connected with said hollow ends and provided with inwardly-extending arms projecting into and detachably connected with said hollow ends.
4. In a binder of the character described, the combination of two suitable cover-sections, two clamping-bars hinged thereto, and eXtensible end binding-posts detachably connected with said clamping-bars and which comprise two telescoping 1nembers,and means for firmly securingsaid telescoping members together in any desired position.
5. In a binder of the character described, the combination of two suitable cover-sections, two clamping-bars hinged thereto, extensible intermediate binding-posts connecting said clamping-bars, and extensible end binding-posts detachably connected with the ends of both said clamping-bars.
6. In a binder of the character described, the combination of two suitable cover-sec tions, two clamping-bars connected therewith, extensible posts connecting said clamping-bars, and a spring-equipped f0llower,c0mprising two bars joined by extensible posts, springs tending to separate said bars, and means forlimiting the separation of said bars, said bars being provided with recesses for receiving a clamping-bar binding-post.
