1951 G. M. FLATIN ET AL BINDER DETACHABLE HAND REST Filed June 24, 1949 INVENTOR.
FLATIN OEVIG LENN M. Q AGLVIN H. P.
1&4. 2 30 m Patented Dec. 25, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BINDER DETACHABLE HAND REST Glenn M. Flatin and Alvin H. Rorvig, Rothsay, Minn.
Application June 24, 1949, Serial No. 101,188
1 Claim. (Cl. 281--16) This invention relates to an extension hand rest for book binders and the like. i
It is an object of this" invention to provide an extension hand rest, of the kind to be more particularly described hereafter, having means for detachably securing the hand rest to an outer cover of a loose-leaf book binder and the like and having hinged hand rest leaves hingedly supported between the outer covers of the hand rest.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hand rest of this kind which may be readily made in different sizes to fit various sizes of books, binders, and the like.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a hand rest of this kind to make writing in books as ledgers and the like, easier when reaching the bottom of the pages.
With the above and other objects in View, our invention consists in the novel combination arrangement and details of structure set-forth in the specification and drawings, and then more particularly described in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book binder constructed according to an embodiment of our invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view, partly broken away, of a detachable hand rest secured on a loose-leaf book binder.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a top plan View of one of the clamping elements, removed from the assembly.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure '2' is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line 1-1, of the lower end of the clamping element.
Figure 8 is a transverse section taken on the line 88 of Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates generally a loose-leaf book binder, of substantially conventional construction used for a ledger or for supporting paper leaves II for writing. The loose-leaf binder I0 is formed of a pair of hinged outer cover members I2 and I4 hingedly connected together by a hinged connection on a center cover member l5. The loose-leaf binder I0 is formed with split rings l6 mounted on a resilient ring supporting member ll, which in turn is fixedly secured to the center cover member l by rivets I8 or other suitable fastening devices.
In the use of loose-leaf book binders of this substantially conventional type the leaves I I, supported for writing, have the side edges thereof extending outwardly to the side edges of the cover members I2 and M. It is intended, in the use of the binder detachable hand rest IElconstructed according to an embodiment of this invention, to have the side edges of the leaves I I terminated in,- wardly from the extreme outer side edges of the cover element l2 and M, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings. By disposing the outer side edges of the writing sheets H inwardly from the outer edges of the cover members sufficient space is provided, in the open portion of the book binder [0, for engaging a pair of clamping elements 20 and 2| on the side edges of the binder cover without interfering with the, turning or folding of the pages I I, while providing,
for the suitable fixed attachment of the binder hand rest l9.
j The binder hand rest I9 is formed of a pair of outer rigid rest cover members 22 and 24 hingedly connected together by their hinged connection to a center hand rest cover member 25. The cover members 22, 24, and 25 are formed of paper, plastic, or other suitable material substantially the same as the material from which the outer binder cover members 12 and I4 are formed. A suitable metal clamping member 26 is fixed on the inner surface of the center cover member 25 and is formed with a pair of spaced apart split rings 21 and 28 swingably mounted thereon. The rings 21 and 28 are formed in substantially the same manner as the rings I6, described above, for releasably securing a plurality of binder leaves 29 between the cover members 22 and 24. The binder leaves 29 are formed of thin sheets of paper, or other suitable material having the same thickness as the paper leaves l l on the binder l 0.
The binder hand rest I9 is formed for disposition on the lower edge of the binder cover in substantial planar alignment with the respective cover members l2 and I4. Each of the binder cover members 22 and 24 is formed with a pair of lugs 30 extending upwardly beyond the upper edge thereof and secured to the inner faces. The lugs 30 are adapted to be engaged on the inner surface of the respective cover members 12 and 14 when the hand rest members 22 and 24 are supported thereon. The leaves 29 on the rest [9 will be foldable about the same axis as the leaves ll.
Each of the clamping members 20 and 2| is formed in substantially the same manner so that a detailed description of one may be suitably applied as a description of the other.
The clamping member 20 is formed with an elongated tubular body 3| open at the upper end thereof and formed with an upwardly directed hook 32 at the lower end. The cross section of the clamping member 3| is oval in configuration and a pair of detents 34 are struck indirectly on the side edges of the upper end. The detents 34 are disposed in transverse alignment for engagement in asel'ected pair of detents 35' along the length of the upper telescopic clamping member 36.
The upper clamping member 36 is formed as an elongated tubular body also oval in configuration having a downwardly directed hook 31 at the 7 upper end thereof. A plurality of outwardly opening detents 35 are struck on the side edges of the body 36 and the body 36 is sli'deably engaged through the upper open end of the lower clamping member 3 I. A set screw 38 is threadably engaged through the bight portion of the hook 31 for engagement with one edge of the outer coverm'embers for adjustably' securing the clamping element 20on thebinder cover.
Irithe use and ope'ration of the binder detachable hand rest I9 the cover members 22 and 24"are disposed in alignment with thecovers l2 and M of the binder'at the lower end thereof. The clampingmembers 20 and 2t are engaged on the side edges of the covers on the binder l0 3 1111 1881719. Thev clamping members 36 will initially beadjusted in theclampingmembers 3| by the telescopicenga-gement of the clamping member '36 'in'the upper open end of the clamping member 3|. The set screw 38 will be adjusted for; securely clamping the clamping members 21' and 22 m place with the binder rest covers 22 and-'24 extending downwardly below the lower edge of the binder covers l2 and M. The binder leaves 29 will be disposed in planar alignment with the leaves H-j so that-when the leaves II are turnedin the binder llltheleavesZEl may be turned in the rest l9 to provide a substantially level assembly.
The binder hand rest I9, thus formed, may be suitably attached to any binder for a book by the clamping members 20 and 2| and the leaves 29 may be folded or hinged with the Writing leaves ll so that a level writing surface will always be provided for writing on the lower end of each of the pages or leavesll A binder hand rest comprising a pair of substantially rigid rest members hingedly connected together for abutting disposition with one end of the hingedly connected covers of a book binder, and in planar alignment therewith, a pair of telescoping clamping members releasably engagiing the. opposing; end of the respective covers andthe rest members, connecting tabs fixed on each of said rest members for overlying the adjacent edge of the respective covers, and rest leaves hinged between said rest members for selective disposition in alignment withjthe leaves of the binder.
