Description

Patented June 2, 1903.`
1 PATENT" OFFICE.
DAVID R. y RooHii, or cHIcAeILLINoIs.
`1"lvlETALLFOLDING"'BED.`
SPECIFICATION forming para of Letters Patent m1293595, dated June 2, 190s.
Application nea July 25,1902. serial No. 117,061. (N o model.; 1
.To au whom,` it may concern,.- i
Be it known that I, DAVID R. ROCE, a citizen of the'i'United States, residing at Chicago,`
county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metal Folding Beds; and I declare the follow-` ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had' tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication.
My invention has for itsobject theproduction of a metal folding` bed which shall combine the elements of strength, durability, cheapness in manufacture, and ability to be folded into a small compass whennot in use.` It consists in the combination of devices and` appliances hereinafter described and claimed. 1 Figure l is a plan view of mybed in its open or extended position; Fig. 2, a sectional view on line 2 2, Iiigflgl-Fifg.` 3, a sectional view on line 3, Fig. `l; Fig. 4, asideelevation of the bed foldedgFig. 5,1-a plan viewin the latter position, and Fig' a detail of `one of the connections. j f
In carrying ,out the invention A AVA? A5. represent upright posts or standards." They are connected togethuerata given height fromA the licor-say twelve inches, more or less-byl The hinge just referred 'to is a iitting E, bi-
furcated, as at e, as shown in Fig.` 6, each of the bifurcated arms being provided withan oriiice to embrace the posts A2 and A3. F is the spring or mattress, preferably formed with an angle-iron frame, as shown in Fig. 2,
and pivoted totherod C-by blocks f,en1brac` ing the rod C, suitable collars f being provided to prevent play of the mattress along the rod C., On `the fitting d on the end of each arm D D' is a lug or projection d2, adapted to receive and support the outer corners ofthe mattress.
The operation of the structure will `nowbe` ing a compact folding structure.
`the rodC, and the arms D D can` then be swung in the positionshownin Fig. 5,thusmak It is only necessary when the bed is to be put into use to swing but thearms DED` `and lower the mattress. By pivoting "the mattress or spring at a point somewhat" in from the edge, as shown, the upper edge of the mattress when it is foldedlnp will come substantially to the top of the posts, or alittle below them, so that the structure `is rendered more snug when folded.
Preferably I make the upright posts A A A2 A3, the cross-pieces B B', the connectingrod C, andthe arms D D of gas-pipe, and the connecting-fittings are of the usual form used in connecting structures of this character; but Ido` not care to limit myself to the use fof gas-pipe or to thc use of the form of fittings shown.
That I claim is"- l 1. In a metal folding bed, the combination with two pairs of upright posts, a`pipe c011- h understood.` The mattress `is supported at nection uniting the individual posts 'of each l pair, a T-coupling included in each of said pipe connections at a point intermediate of its ends, a pipe extending between said pairs of posts having its ends inserted in and supported "by said T- couplings, a verticallyswinging. bed-bottom extending across and supported near one side by said rod, straps secured to said bed-bottom surroundingsaid rod andthereby pivotally mounting said bedbottom on said rod, and means `for supporting the other side of said bed-bottom when in itslower position. t
2. Ina metal folding bed', the combination with two pairs of upright posts,'a connection ,includin g a T-coupling uniting the individual ported thereby7 a bed-bottom extending above and supported near one side by said pipe, horizontally-swinging arms having depending legs at their outer ends and pivotaily seoured'at their inner ends to corresponding posts in said pairs, bifuroated fittings rigidly secured to the inner ends of saidarms and surrounding the posts with the bifureated portions looated above and below the fittings forming parts of the connections between the pairs of posts, horizontally-projecting lugs secured to said arms near their outer ends adapted lto support one side of the bed-bottom when the latter is in its lowered position.
In testimony Whereoi` I sign this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
D. R. ROCHE.
