SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,728, dated June 2, 1903. Application led October 7, 1902. :Serial No. 126,342. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK D. BULLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a pipe-wrench which will operate effectively and quickly upon pipes of several different sizes and which does not. require any adjustment of the parts therefor. I accomplish this object by the wrench described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side View of my wrench in its fully-opened position. Fig. 2 is a side View of my wrench applied upon a pipe. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A A are the curved jaws of my wrench, which are pivoted together by the riveted bolt G. These jaws have teeth A on their inner or opposing surfaces and terminate in rearwardly-projecting `shanks B B, one of which is a little shorter than the other. It is immaterial as to which of the Shanks is the shorter. To the shorter shank is pivotally united by riveted bolt C lever D, which bears against the end of the longer shank when in use on a pipe, and as the lever is pivoted to the end of the shorter shank very close to the end of the longer shank it has great power in forcing the jaws together, thereby givin g them a stron g bite on the pipe, and the greater thepressure on the lever the harder the jaws bite the pipe, so that it is almost impossible for the wrench to slip on the pipe. To keep the lever centrally alined upon the end of the longer shank, I provide a retaining-strap E, which passes around the lever and is pivoted to the end of the longer shank by rivet F. If desired, this strap may be omitted. A groove could be formed in the end of the shank for the reception of the lever, which would be rounded to fit the groove, or a groove could be formed in the top of the' lever and the end of the shank made semiglobular to it into the groove of the lever.
It will be observed that my wrenchis adapted to turn any pipe which is slightly less in diameter than the distance between the tips of the jaws in their expanded position and that it will work equally well upon a pipe whose diameter is slightly larger than the distance Vbetween the jaws at the point of their farthest separation when closed by the lever as far as the same will bring them together, thus adapting my wrench for use upon pipes of several dierent sizes without any adjustment of the parts.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
`l. A pipe-wrench composed of two curved jaws pivoted together and terminating in Shanks, one of which is shorter than the other; a lever pivotally united to the shorter shank and adapted to bear against the end of the longer shank to close the jaws.
2. A pipe-Wrench composed of two curved jaws united by a pivotal bolt and having teeth on their opposing surfaces, said jaws terminating to the rear of the pivot in shanks, one of which is shorter than the other; a lever pivoted to the shorter shank and adapted t0 bear against the end of the longer shank to close the jaws.
3. A pipe-wrench composed of two curved jaws having teeth on their opposing surfaces,
`said jaws being pivotally united and terminating rearwardly in Shanks, one of which is shorter than the other; a lever pivoted to the shorter shank and adapted to hear against the end of the longer shank to close the jaws; a retainingstrap surrounding said lever and pivoted to the end of the longer shank.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 29th day of September, 1902.
FRANK D. BULLARD.
