"JAR.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 727,988, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed February 24:, 1903. Serial No. 144,572. (No model.)
of Oogar, in the county of Oaddo and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a newand Improved Jar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved jar for containing fruits, preserves, meats, and other food products and arranged to insure hermetic sealing of the mouth of the jar to protect the contents thereof against air, moisture, and other influences tending to spoil the goods contained in the jar.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation of a filled jar, parts being shown in section.
The jar A is provided at its mouth with an external screw-thread A, on which screws the usual cap B for closing the jar. The mouth of the jar is also provided with an internal screw-thread A on which screws the thread 0, forming part of a retainer O, preferablyin the form of a disk made of wood or other material and provided on its peripheral surface with the screw-thread C. On the top of the retainer-disk is formed an ofiset 0 adapted to be taken hold of by the operator either by hand or by the use of a suitable Wrench or like tool to screw the retainer inward or outward in the mouth of the jar. The screw-thread O of the retainer is preferably made of cork or other elastic packing material to form a packing to insure a complete air and water tight jointbetween the retainer and the inner threaded face of the The device is used as follows: When the cap and the retainer are removed from the jar, then the latter can he filled in the usual manner, and the retainer 0 is first screwed into the mouth of the jar until its under side engages the top of the contents of the jar, so that the retainer extends a distance from the upper edge of the mouth of the jar, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawing. After the retainer 0 is in position, then a sealing material D-such as water, Wax, or the likeis poured'into the upper end of the mouth of the jar to rest on top of the retainer 0, the sealing material extending into the mouth of the jar to a suitable depththat is, nearly to the top of the edge of the jar. Now it will be seen that the sealing material in connection with the retainer Oforms a perfect hermetic sealing for the mouth of the jar, so as to exclude air, moisture, or other external influences from the contents of the jar, thereby preventing deterioration of the goods. The cap B is screwed on in the usual manner to close the jar.
By the use of the retainer 0 the contents of the jar are held against movement therein when the jar is handled, and in case the jar is filled with fruits contained in a preserving liquid the retainer 0 presses the uppermost layer of the fruit below the level of the preserving liquid, so that all the fruit is submerged in the liquid.
When it is desired to remove the contents of the jar, then the cap B is first unscrewed, after which the sealing material D is removed, and then the retainer is unscrewed to gain access to the contents of the jar, which can now be removed from the mouth of the jar in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A jar having an external and an internal screw-thread at its mouth, a cap screw- .ing on the external screw-thread, and a retainer screwing on the internal screw-thread, as set forth.
2. A jar having a retainer screwing into the mouth of the jar, and a sealing material in the space between the retainer and the upper edge of the mouth of the jar, as set forth.
3. A jar having a retainer'screwing in the mouth of the jar, and provided with a packing forming a screw-thread engaging a thread on the inside of themouth of the jar, and a sealing material in the upper end of the mouth of the jar, resting on the said retainer, as set forth.
4. A jar having a retainer screwing into the mouth of the jar, consisting of a disk,
and a peripheral packing forming a screwname to this specification in the presence of thread for engaging a thread on the inside of two subscribing witnesses.
the mouth of the jar as set forth.
5. A jar having an internal screw-thread JAMES ALBERT MAXSON' 5 at its mouth, and a retainer screwing on the Witnesses:
said internal screw-thread, as set forth. HENRY ZIMMERMANN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my CHARLES E. ANDREWS.
