wth/100Mo Mm @Nissa srarss PATENT FFICE.
Y HENRY M. wILL1s,`oF EAST WILLisToN, NEW YORK.y COVER :son dans. CAMS. AND samlLAR ARTIQLES.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, HENRY M. WILLIS, a citizen of` the United States,'residing in East Williston, Nassau county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Covers for Jars, Cans, and Simiar Articles, of which the following is a descri tion.
T inventionrelates to jars, bottles, cans,
&c., for holding liquids, salves, and other' more or less fluid or solid substances, and particularly has referenceto covers or Stoppers .for hermetically sealing such receptacles.
Among the objects of this invention may 'be noted the following: to provide' a receptacle of the ln'nd noted wit a cap, cover, or stopple which will eifectivel prevent air the contents or the atter leakin which will completely seal the contents; to provide a coverV for receptacles which cannot e jarred or shaken loose; to provide a cover A for packing` and storing vessels which strengthens the neck of the vessel; to rovide a dou le cap or cover which hermetica yseals the vessel to which it is a plied, and to rovide a cover for vessels of t e kind noted aving means for scraping clean the inside of the neck of. the vessel asthe cover is applied or set.
With these objects injview and others which will aplpisear during the courseof this description t arts, features, and combinations hereinafter escribed and claimed. lInthe drawings forming part of this de- .j scription, Figure l' is a longitudinal vertical section of a j ar or areceptacle havin the cover of my invention applied thereto. ig. 2 is a vertical central sectiono the cover removed;
, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan ofthe cover,
showing the details of the invention.
' The numeral 1 denotes the body of an ordinary glass jar for. holding li uids, salves, gums, &c., the neck 2 of whic isprovided vwith the usual screw-threads, as shown. This receptacle maybe a can, bottle','or in any other form and'of'any suitable'materialf- The cap 3 has thek Bange threaded to correspond with. the Athrea s of the neck 2. The cap-3 has applied to it the cup-shaped device 5, the
- A ange 6 of which 'depends within the neck 2, 7 said device being secured by means of rivets' 7 to said cover 3, though anyother securing means may employed the scope o -side and preventin a blow on theiiange 4 invention consists in the' my invention. The flanges 4 and` 6 embrace the neck 2, the flange 6 closely engaging the inner surface of said neck, and between them the two flanges provide a receptacle for wax or other plastic material, such as paralin, 8. Obviously any desired quantity of the plastic material may be poured in iiuid form into the flange-receptacle in -order to secure the results desired, and when the cover is screwed upon the neck, as shown in Fig. 1, the latter will force it into whatever space there may be between the neck and cover, thus completely sealing the receptacle. When the cover is removed and some of the contents of the receptacle extracted or oured out, more or less will cling to the insi e of the neck.- When the cover isagain a plied, the flange 6 will scrape and clean sai neck. This flange also strengthens the neck by bracing it on the in- Jfrom breaking or acturing it. Moreover, the device 5 constitutes a sto per, vas its iian e iits snugly within the nec though I have described my invention inconnection with jars or other receptacles provided with a neck and have speciiically shown the latter feature, it is to be distinctly understood that rece tacles are contem lated which are devoid o a distinctive nec -and the body portion of which is provided with means by which the cap, (cover, or stopper may be applied thereto. In other words, my invention contemplates a receptacle of the character described and for the urposes stated .with which a cap or cover o m invention may be combined and with the ody portion of which about the opening the cover may coperate. i Having thus describedm invention in its details, it will be obvious t at the following 9 5 are among its advantages: The double-flange cover affords a receptacle for the plastic material and hermetically seals the vessel; the
double-Harige cover braces, strengthens, and protects the neck ofthe vessel. -By combining roo ,the device -5 with the cover,-a cleaner for the one the ot er, means for rigidly secur- I' 1o x05 What I claim, and desire to secure by Letj ation with the neck of a vessel,
ing said devices together so that-their flanges .In testimony whereof I have hereunto A extend parallel and provide a space between signed my name in the presence of two subro the same for the reception of plastic material scribing Witnesses.
and the said neck, and the flange of the inner device snugly tting the inside of said neck, HENRY M' WILLIS' so as to brace and strengthen the same and Witnesses:
act as a cleaner therefor, substantially as de- CHAS. MCC. CHAPMAN,
