PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR R. ALLEN, OF PRESCOTT, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 727,871, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed December l7,1902. Serial No. 135,578. (No model.)
To (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR R. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Prescott, in the county of Yavapai and Territory of Arizona, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Devices for Holding and Counting Mileage; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the same, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation or face view of the invention, partlybroken away. Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of a portion of the book or ticket I).
The invention relates to devices for hold-. ing and counting mileage; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates the frame of the holder, and b the mileage-book or ticket, which is held therein by means of the bend or clamp c atone end of said holder. At its other end the holder is provided with a chamber or recess d above its base, said recess opening toward the other or clamp end of the holder. This recess is provided with a top e and sides f. The top is marked with dials g and h, designed to show, through'the medium of the pointers 7c, the number of miles torn olf from the ticket by the conductor.
A shaft 1 extends across the recess or boxing (1 and has its journals seated in the sides with a pinion m, which is in gear with the pinion n of a second shaft 19, which is provided with a second pinion q, engaging a gearwheel r on the first indicator-shaft, said gearwheel having an extension or carrying arm 8, designed to engage the large gear-wheel if on the second indicator-shaft at each revolution of said first indicator-shaft, such revo-' One end of this shaft is provided lution having an exact relation to the circumference of the transverse shaft Z, over which the mileage-ticket is drawn. The circumference of the'shaft l is usually sufficient to carry one section of five miles of the mileageticket; but it may be arranged for a larger or smaller number of miles, as may be found convenient. The shafts Z and ye may be connected by pulleys and a small belt instead of by toothed 'pinions, if desirable; but the pinions are preferred, being more exact in their action.
At the open side of the recess itis designed to attach to the top 6 by means of hinges a lip-piece 'U, which is held down on the ticket by means of a spring to with sufficient force to hold the ticket in place and allow the used portion thereof to be torn off against its straight-edge 5. When the next portion is to be taken off, this'lip-piece can be raisedsufficiently to enable the conductor to get hold of the end of the ticket, which can then be drawn out and the used portion torn ofi, as above described, the lip piece having returned to position against the ticket.
The mileage-ticket shown in connection with this device is of folded character, its folds being superposed lengthwise in the holder, as indicated in the drawings. The first portion of the ticket having been passed around the transverse shaftl, the ticket can be drawn out as .may be necessary and due account kept by the indicators on the dials of the used portion thereof.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with mileage-ticket and a ticket-holder frame, having a clamp at frame, having a clamp at one end, and a recess at the other end, of a spring-operated lip-piece, a transverse shaft, dials and indi- 2 renew cators, and gearing in train with such shaft shaft and indicators, substantially as speciand indicators, substantially as specified. fied.
