sPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727, dated y 1903- Application filed April 24, 1902.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that WILLIAM E.,HAIGHT, deceased, late a resident of McMinnville, in the county of Yamhill and State of Oregon, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improvement incombination-tools, and has for its object to provide a device in which various forms of tools are embodied in one device and which may be readily and easily adjusted for use upon pipes, nuts, and the like or as a hammer, pliers,wire-cutter, tack or staple puller, rivetheader, or as a rule or square.

With these objects in view the invention also consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination and arrangement of parts, as will be fully described in the following specification, and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the drawings, in which v Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved combination-tool. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the handle-section of the tool. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the detachable lever-section. Fig. 5 is a detail section about line 5 5 of Fig. 2, and Figs. 6 and 6 are detail views of the pivot-jaw.

In carrying out the invention there is employed a handle-section A, having one end reduced, as at A, to form a screw-driver, which reduced portion is slotted, as at A to form a staple-puller. The opposite end of the handlesection terminates in a head B, and upon one face of the said handle, adjacent the head, is formed a series of recesses C, in any one of which is designed to beheld the shaft or pintle D, carried by the detachable lever D, the said lever having the end in which the shaft or pintle is held bifurcated and the members D straddling the handle-section and having their extreme ends apertured, as at D in which is held a shaft E, that is designed to hold a movable jaw F. This jaw F has its upper or inner face serrated, as at F, and upon its forward face is formed a recess F, that is designed to engage a pipe or circular object and securely hold it when the lever-section is Serial No. 104,486. moved. The opposite face of the jaw is provided with an enlargement F to form a rivetheader, as will appear later on.

In order to hold the shaft or pintle D firmly in one of the notches, there is provided a spring clamping member G, that is securely held in recesses formed in the head of the handle-section and that extends back over all of the recesses, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, so that no matter in which notch the pintle may be held the spring will be firmly seated thereon and securely hold it in position. By this arrangement it will be clearly seen that in order toadjust the detachable lever-section to accommodate objects of larger or smaller diameter it is only necessary to press the lever-section back until the pintle D is out of the notch, when the said lever-section may be adjusted to the required distance. The forward face of the sections D of the lever is curved or recessed, as shown at D*, which portion of each. section is designed to form a wire-cutter, and when so used the wire is held in a recess A, formed in the handle-section. A series of serrations A are formed in the said handle adjacent the head, which are adapted-to register with the serrated face of the movable head when the lat- 'ter is in the position shown in Fig. 2, and which are designed to form a gripping-section when the tool is used as a pipe-Wrench, and adjacent these serrations A the head B is recessed, as at B, in which is designed to be held the head of a nail or spike when it is desired to drive a nail with one hand while holding the work with the other hand. It will of course be understood that when the nail is so held the movable lever is adjusted so that the head F'will firmly hold the nail in its position. j

The outer end of the movable lever-section is bifurcated, providing a hook or'claw D which forms a suitable nail-puller, as will be clearly understood, and in practice it is preferred to provide the handle-section with suitable graduations, as shown at A and A In practice the spring G is preferably made of a single strand of wire bent at its middle, as at G, to form the double sides, as shown I00 at G By this arrangement an even resiliency of the springis obtained throughout its entire length.

From the foregoing it will be seen that an exceedingly simple and economical form of tool is provided that may be readily and easily adjusted, so that it may be used for various purposes, as hereinbefore set forth, and it should be stated that when the tool is used for a rivet-header the movable head E is adj usted so that the portion F will be in position to engage the side of the handle-section when the lever and handle are pressed together.

Having thus fully described the invention,

what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-

1. The combination of a handle-section, of a movable lever-section held thereon, a pivoted jaw carried by the said lever, said jaw having a notch arrangedin the face thereof, and means for holding the lever in its adjustable position, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of a handle-section having notches formed therein, of a movable jaw carrying a shaft that is designed to rest in the said notches, and a spring carried by the said handle-section for holding the shaft in the said notches, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of a handle-section, having its end provided with a head, of a movable lever-section adjustably held on the said handle, a head pivotally held in the end of the said lever, and means carried by the said handle-section for holding the said lever in position, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination of a handle-section, having one end terminating in a head, the said handle having one face provided with a series of notches, and its opposite face serrated and provided with a notch adjacent the said serrations, substantially as shown and described.

5. The combination of a handle -section having a head formed upon one end thereof, of a movable lever carried by the said handlesection, the said lever having one end provided with the side members whose outer or free ends are apertured, a shaft arranged in the said apertures, a head pivotally held on the said shaft, the said head having one face serrated, and a notch formed in its opposite face, a rivet-header formed on the said head, a shaft carried by the lever which is adapted to engage the handle-section, and a spring fixedly held in the said head and the handle-section, and adapted to engage the said shaft, substantially as described.

6. The combination of a handlesection having one end provided with a head, the inner face of which is recessed, the said handle having one surface provided with a series of notches and its opposite face provided with a series of serrations, and a notch arranged therein adjacent the serrations, of a movable lever-section having a shaft that is adapted for engagement with the said notches, the forward face of the said lever-section being curved to form a wire-cutter, a movable head carried by the said lever and a spring fixedly held to the head of the said handle-section, the free end of said spring being arranged over the said notches, and being adapted for engagement with the shaft of the said lever, substantially as shown and described.
