CROWBAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,284, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed February 2'7, 1903. Serial No. 145,416. (No model.)
To ztZZ whom, i1; may concern:
Be it known that I, MroHA L F. CAHILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crowbarsmf which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in crowbars; and its object is to provide an attachment which is adjust-ably secured thereto and which is soconstructed as to readily engage a timber or other similar article placed thereunder and serve as a fulcrum for the bar.
The invention consists in providing a crowbar having a series of apertures therein, one of which is adapted to receive a pin which extends through the forked end of a plate which is provided with sharpened lugs or projections at the opposite end.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferredform of my in;
vention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a section therethrough. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views showing the mannerin which said bar may be employed.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a crowbar preferably provided with a too 2 at one end thereof and havinga series of apertures 3. Any one of these apertures is adapted to receive a bolt or pin 4, which extends through ears 5, projecting from a head 6, which is formed at the upper end of a plate 7. The lower edge of the plate is sharpened, as shown at 8, and the ends of said edge have pointed lugs or extensions 9'- sions at the opposite end of theplate. l. 5
bar 1 it can be readily inserted between ties 10 and placed in engagement with a crossbeam 11. By placing the toe 2 in engagement with the timbers 12 and drawing downward upon the bar in direction of the arrow in Fig. 4 said timbers can be forced upwardly and outwardly. The same result can be obtained by reversing the bar, so as to bring the toe in engagement with the beam 11 and placing the extensions 9 in engagement with the timbers 12. The bar 1 in-this case can be drawn upward, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5. The attachment is extremely simple and inexpensive and can be the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications inay be made therein without departing from. the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within thescope'ofmy invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with a bar having apertures therein; of a plate, cars at one end thereof adapted to receive the bar therebetween, and extensions'at the opposite end of the plate.
2. The combination with a bar having ap= ertures therein; of a plate, parallel ears at one end thereof adapted to be pivoted to op posite sides of the bar, and pointed exten 3. The combinatio'nlwith a bar having atoe at one end, and a series of'apertu'res; of a plate, a head at one end thereof,,ears projecting from the head extending to opposite sides of the bar,a pivoted bolt withinthe ears and engaging one of the apertures, and extensions at the opposite end of the plate.
4. The combination with a bar having a toe at one end, and a series of apertures; of a plate, a head at one end thereof, parallel ears I00 extending from the head to opposite sides of the plate, parallel ears extending thererd of the bar, a bolt secured to the ears and enfrom, and a pivot-bolt connecting the ears. gaging one of said apertures, a sharpened In testimony whereof I affix my signature working edge to the plate, and pointed eX- in presence of two witnesses.
tensions at the ends of said edge.
' 5. A crowbar attachment of the character MICHAEL CAHILL' described comprising a plate having a sharp- Witnesses: ened working edge, pointed extensions at the FRANK J. DUNN,
