TREAT T. PROKSSER, OF'G-HIGAGO, ILLINOIS.
Latem Patent No. 72,677, daad Beamter 24, 1861.

TO ALL WHOM IT CONCERN':
Be it known that I, TREAT T. PROSSER, ofthe city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, inthe State of' Illinois,
have invented a new and improved Brush and Mop-Head combined;A and I do hereby declare that the followingis a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, in which like lett'ers represent like parts.
Figure 1 is a. perspective view.
Figure 2, the lever-beam d al 'of fig. 1.
Figure 3, a section of thescrew-ferrule b and lugs e c of iig. il.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and Operation; I
Letter a, tig, 1,"is the handle; letters 6 b, a screw-ferrnle; cc, the lugs thereon, which hold and operate the journal-end of the lever d d, which has a journal at one end to operate freely between the lugs on the ferrule.- V and a. large hole, s0 as t0 receive the screw-ferrule and allow it to freely operate therein.' Near the centre of the lever-beam, iig. 2ff are two trunnions, around which thcends'of the mop-wires nre bent; and the end 0f the beam Zlis of a suitableform to clasp the brush when between it and the two projections c on the head h z, as seen in g. 1, at the' bottom ofthe figure.
v After selecting a handle, such as arevin commonuse, I prepare it for the castings or irons, by boring a hole into the end for the screwthat attaches it to the head, anddrive suitable pins into thehandle to operate the screw-ferrnle, and through it the lever-beam.
The irons being c ast, they are in readiness to be put together, which is done in the following manner: The lever-beam is inserted between the lugs as sho-wn in fig. 1, e c, and the screw-ferrule in the aperture or hole in the beam. The handle is inserted into thesc'rew-ferrule, and screwed down through it so'as to receive the head, (a. washer being placed between the end-of the handle and thehead,)and a' screw is passer] through the head and the washer, and firmly screwed into the handle, leaving the screw sulciently loose inthe .head and washer to freely turn therein. The wiregg, fig. A1, being arranged in position, as shown, and twisted around the trunnions on the lever-beam, the handle isA completed and ready for use. By putting several pins. into the handle to operate the ferrule, a much shorter ferrule can he used than otherwise. 5
From this arrangement it will be readily seen that a chenp, durable,-and complete article is produced,4 doing away with bolts and rivets vto suchA an extent as to make the compound brush and mop head about as simple and cheap as either ofthose for mops or brushes, and much more desirable. i
After thus fully describing the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the movable ferrule with the pins in the handle of the mop, all as for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the handle of a. brush and mop-holder, o f a ferrule, provided with screw-threads upon its interior surface, and with lugs on the outside, all as for the purposes set forth. i
8. The combination of the ferrule bib, provided with-lugs c e, and the .leverfd d, all 'as for the purposes set forth.
4. The lever-beam d d with movable fulcrum, serving to hold the brush at one end, arid-also .to operate the wire that holds Athe mop, all as for the purposes lset forth. l v
