lllOLDlhlG APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming pars f :Letters Patent No. 726,515, dated April 28, 19031.
. Application led October 7,1901- Serial No. 77,834. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES M. DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Molding Apparatus,of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
lo This invention relates to that type of machine-molding apparatus wherein the pattern is supported by or secured to a so-called vibrator frame, shaped exteriorly to correspond with the match-frame upon which it rests and with the drag and cope flasks, the vibrator-frame beinginterposed between said flasks and vibrated preparatoryto the removal of the cope and afterward when the pattern is drawn from the drag, one form of such type zo of apparatus being shown in United States Patent No. 654,292, dated July 24E, 1900. As the frame rests directly upon the drag-ask and in turn supports the weight of the cope, the friction is considerable on the contacting 25 surfaces of the several parts, so that the response of the frame to tapping is very sluggish, and to set up sufficient vibratcry motion therein to properly separate `the pattern from the sand quite heavy blows must be struck 3o by the vibrating device, one well-known form of which is operated by compressed air. In practice the slighter the vibration of the pattern-supporting or vibrator frame to enable it to be withdrawn from the sand the better 3 5 and more accurate the mold, and in my present invention I have provided means for sustaining the vibrator-frame in such manner that it is readily and quickly responsive to very slight blows, and preferably the frame 4o is sustained at its corners.
In the present embodiment of my invention the vibrator-frame is adapted to be sustained in a yielding manner between the drag and cope flasks before their separation, so that the least jar or blow thereupon will set up sufcient vibration in the frame, and the means sustaining said frame will act promptly to restore it to its normal position orfl into the exact position it occupied when the sand was 5o rammedupon it.
Figure l, in plan view, shows a vibraton frame illustrating my invention in one of the best forms now known to me; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken out,
to show more clearly one of the yielding supports, the drag and cope flasks being indicated by dotted lines.
The vibrator-frame A, having ears d by which to handle the same, and supporting within it the pattern a and gaten?, are and 6o may be all as usual in molding apparatus of the type referred to, a vibrator V being shown attached to the frame.
In accordance with my invention- I provide the frame, which is or may be of any usual or suitable shape, with widely-separated supports b, preferably composed of india--rubber or other elastic or resilient and yielding 1naterial, the ends of the supports, herein shown as cylindrical plugs, projecting slightly beyond 7e each face ofthe frame and secured in holes in the latter, the supports being shown as arranged symmetrically.
When the ends of the supports contact with the opposed edges of the drag and cope flasks D and C, respectively, as shown in Fig. 2, the vibrator frame when the mold is finished may be readily vibrated or moved by a very slight blow or series of blows, the supports yielding readily to such vibrational move- 8o ment, and the natural resiliency of the supports will act immediately upon stoppage of the vibrator to return the frame and pattern into substantially the exact position occupied when the drag or the cope were rammed.
VInstead of making the supports'of indiarubber they might be made of metal in the form of spiral or other springs.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 9o Patent, is
A vibrator-frame for molding apparatus, having symmetrically-arranged elastic supports mounted thereon and projecting beyond the opposite faces thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES M. DAY.
