To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. DEMMLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Means for Venting Core Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My' invention relates to molds or core l0 boxes to be used in connection with mold or core making machines of the so-called Hewlett type, in ,which a mold or core box is clamped against a sand container from which sand is forced into the mold or core l box by compressed air. I find that the compressed air passing into the mold or core box and also'the atmospheric air in the empty moldor core box together retard the roper How of sand into the mold or core ox and prevent the proper formation and packing of the sand. The principal object of my invention is to provide for the proper escape vof air fr m the moldor core box b inexpensive and convenient means.

The machine illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a frame 1 which supports a pressure ead 2 anda sand container 3. The sand container 3 is provided with a ,removable head 4 and a removable bottom plate 5 formed with an aperture 6, the heads being secured tothe sand container by screws a. e5 The sand-container 3 is connected with' a source of compressed air .or other pressure uid by a pipe 13. The walls of the mold or core box 7 are formed with apertures in each of which is secured a plug 8 formed with a plurality of small perforations, the perforated-surface of the plug forming part of the molding surfacel of the core box as illustrated in the drawings. It will be understood, of coursethat the mold or core box l7 shown in the drawings is illustrative .only and may be of any desired form and that the-size and location of the apertures in its wall and the size and number of the perforationsin the plugs Awill'vary in accordance with the size and form` of the mold or core box and with the grade of sand being used. The perforations in the plug, of course, are `of such size as to ermit the passage of air while preventing t e passage of sand, and in practice I find it preferable to make the plugs in the form of perforated brass cups.
After a mold or core box has -been clamped against the bottom plate of the sand contalner, compressed air or other pressure-fluid is admitted to the sand container and forces the sand into the mold' or core box. Egress of sand from the mold or core box is effectively prevented but air may Afreely escape from the mold or core box in every desirableplace and direc-tion so that .the sand will be very compactly and firmly formed in the mold or core box.
Having thus described my invention, `what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 2- 1. A 'mold or core box provided with outlet openings, and perforated plugs secured in the respective openings.
