T0 ROBERT BJCAMPBEL'L, OF STH-I-IAVEN, MICHIGAN.
' SAND-HOPPER Specification of Letters Patent.
' iieaamaaiv Feb. "7, 192e.A
Application mea March 21, 1921. serial No. 454,194. c 1 Y To all whom t may concern l Be it known that I, DONALD J. CAMPBELL, al citizen of the United States of America, residing at Muskegon Heights, in the county of Muskegon and, State of Michigan', have invented certain new and useful Improvements inSand-Hopper Construction; and I clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which-it appertains vto make and use the same. f
This invention relates to sand hoppers and is particularly concerned with improvements in hoppers such as may be used with pneumatic sand handling machines, one c onstruction of which is shown in my applicali 10, 1921.' Such machines make use lof the force of compressed air for forcing sand into moulds or core boxes to ram and com- 'press the sameto the4 necessary ldegree ofdensity and with my'invention, the force of.
the compressed air is conserved and practically none of itis lost or dissipated by eX- pansionkof the air laterally through aninert body of sand such as would ,be thefcase if the hopper was ahollow shell with spaced apart outlet openings at the bottom.
'In running large jobs, the hopper lwill be made of metal and the'sand passagesrthere.- through are defined by metal. sides. Many times, however, it is necessary to run a relatively small job, numbering only a relatively small number of moulds or cores-in which case it is not economical or advisable to go to the expense or to spend the time required to make a Special metal sand hopper therefor. Accordingly, the present invention has for its primary consideration Vthe 'construction of'a hopperv in which a .hollow metal shell may be used and equipped with an'A interior core or lling of easily worked material in which the sand passages may be easily formed, this filler beingplaced within the outer shell and used for the running of the particular relatively small job ordered, after which the filler may be removed and a different one placed in the shell for another job of; dier'ent character, the fillers being quickly and easily made and used, and being put in and taken out of theouter shell very quickly, and either discarded after the particular job is done, or kept for future use should the saine be done again'.
noivALD J. CAMPBELL, or MUsnneoN HEIGHTS, momenti, AssIGNoR or own-FOURTH For an understanding. of the invention andthe constructions embodying the same., reference may be had to theY following description, taken in connection with the ao. companying drawing, yin. which,
A Fig. 1 `is aV vertical section taken through ahopper made in accordance with my invention.' 1 'i v, i v Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectionY taken substantially on the plane of line 2 2, of.
Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but in` whicha larger number of sand filler. Fig. 4 is a-'view taken dicated by the arrows.
, Fig. 5 is a vertical Asectional view'th'rough a fstillfurther formof hopper, andl cated by the arrows.V Like reference characters referto like parts in the different gures 'of the drawing.
The outer shell 1 is of metal open at'its.. top and bottom and formed with an out-I wardly extending liiangey 2 at its lower'end to which the lower outlet plate 3 be at-v passages are made through the l y y .onthe planeof line' v 4-4 of F 1g. 3 and looking upwardlyas in- Fig. 6 is. a yview taken on the plane of line 6 6 of F 1g. 5, lookingl upwardly as indi,-l
With the present invention, a filler 5 is placed within the shell, .beingshapedf at itsV outer sides to t Vagainst the inner sides ofl the shell, and being held in place by the atf tachment of the plate 3. This filler may be of any suitable easily worked-material, such as plaster of Paris, wood,or any other material of similar nature which may be either quickly worked ormoulded to the desired shape and which has considerablev stability as to texture. lIn this filler, a plurality of passages 6 ,are made. from the lower "en'dt'o' the upper end inclining inwardly vtoward each other at their upper ends, and having their lower ends positioned directly over the` openings 4c in the plate 3. The material between the inner adjacent sides oit the passages 6 is cut away partly so as to make a pointed portion 7, whereby sand entered into the upper portion of the hopper, to which portion the filler doe-s not reach, must all go into the passages and none will lodge on the central portion of the iiller between the passagesV as would be the case it such pointed portion 7 wasnot made.
The sand goes into the hopper at its upper end in the space indicated at 8 from which it passes into the passages 6. Under the force oi compressed air introduced into the upper end of the hopper, the sand is forced downwardly in the passages at 6 and out through the openings lto the mould. rEhe means for doing` this is no concern oit the present invention, which is directed to the ready and easy 'forming ot a i'iller i'or a hopper shell in accordance with the number of outlet openings through the lower plate, one passage being made for each olf the outlets. ln Figs. 8 and the same shell l andlower plate 3 is shown, except that the plate has a larger number of outlets, this necessitating a correspondingly larger number ol2 said passages (3 in the filler 5a which has the same outer form as filler 5. This illustrates the salient feature of the invention, that is, the easy production ot different temporary fillers for the saine outer hopperY shell.
ln Figs. 5 and 6, a slight modiiication is shown, in which the shell la is elongated, having` a corresponding plate 3 attached thereto at its under side and the ller 5l has passages 6b therein leading downwardly to the outlet openings through the plate. rlhese openings are in alineinent and the passages 6" are located one alter the other in the length of the iiller. This hopper accordingly has four consecutive outlet openings at the bottom and is ot value in maling certain types of elongated moulds, as tor internal combustion engine blocks having tour cylinders; and another filler with sii; sand passages therein and a lower plate 3 with six outlets therein can be very readily placed therein itor a dili'erent type or mould, as for '1; cylinde1 engine blocks, or for the production ot si); smaller moulds of any type that could be produced tour at a time with the filler shown in Fig. 5. ln any case, whatever the type of iiller used in the shell, it is apparent that .the iiller is quickly made, and it is also obvious that the shelll itself is a simple construction which can be quickly made for the type oit work desired, both the shell and filler when both must be made for a 'particular job, being produced much cheaperthan would be the case it the combineds'hell and filler were made` as an integral casting.
l have shown several forms oi iiller and different shells that may be used, though vpense for each is small.
notanything like all of the forms which can be utilized in carrying out the invention. The iiller made ol' easily worked or moulded. material can be made-in a very short time, and itt necessary, the outer shell can be made in a very little longer time, while the eX- This is very important where the lot of moulds to be run is not large enough to warrant theeinitial expense olf making a complete metal filler integral with the shell of the hopper. The liller when it has served its purpose can be detached from the shell and a new filler' nected therewith, said liller having a plu-V rality of sand passages therethrough, substantially as described. Y
Q. In combination, a hopper shell'open at its upper and lower ends, a plate having an outlet opening therein closing the lower end 01": the hopper, and a liller detachably held in the shell by said plate and having a sand passage therethrough extending upwardly :trom the outlet opening to the upper en'd otthe liller, substantially as described. l
3. ln combination, a hopper vshell open at its upper and lower-ends, a plate having a plurality of outlet openingstherein closing the lower end of the shell, and a iiller detachably held in the shell by said plate and having a plurality of sand passages therethrough extending upwardly, one from `each outlet opening in the plate to the upper end of the filler, substantially as described.
d. ln combination, a hopper shell, a filler detachably secured within the shell and having a plurality of sand passages therethrough extending from the upper endet the liller downwardly therethrough,. said` shell having openings at the lower ends of said passages for the outward passage of sand forced into and through said passages, substantially as described.
5. ln combination, a hopper shell, and a iiller therefor of easily worked materialV having sand passages therethrough, said filler being adapted to be detachably sercured within the shell for removal and replaceinentiby other fillers, substantially as described. Y
6. ln combination, a hopper shell having an upwardly tapered upper portion, a plate having outlet openings therethrough closing the lower end of the shellgmeans for detachably connecting the plate to the shell,v and a filler located in the shell vand held therein by the plate, said iiller having sand passages therethrough leading from directly over the outlet openings in the plate to the upper end of the filler and converging to'- lward each other at theirv upper ends,. substantially as described.
having outlet openings therein closing the lower end of the shell, means for detachably connecting the plate to the shell, a 'filler lo cated in the shell and held therein by said plate, said filler terminating short of the upper end of the shell and having a plurality of sand passages therethrough extending from the lower to the upperl end of the lfiller, the lower end of each passage beingposi-` tioned directly over an outlet opening through said p1ate, substantially asf de.-y p scribed. Y '7. In combination', a hopper shell, a plate 8. In combination', a hopper shell, `and a ller detachably andreplaceably heldl in said hopper and having a pluralityof sand passages therethrough leading downwardlyy from vthe upper end 'of the filler, substantiallr as described.
In testlmony whereof I aiix mysignature.
