APPARATUS FOR MAKING SAND GORES.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1908.
Application filed June '12, 1907 Serial No. 378,634.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. BERRY, a resident of New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State of- Pennsylvania, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Apparatus for MakingSand Cores; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Thisinvention relates to apparatus for making sandcores, and more es ecially' to the making of green sand cores to e used in the casting of tubular articles. f
The object of the'invention is to provide apparatus for this purpose adapted especially fgr 'making these cores by a jarring operation so as to dispense largely with the hand work generally employed for making such cores, to improve uniformity of packing and also to expe ite the manufacture so as to cheapen the making of such cores.
The invention comprises the construction of arts hereinafter described and claimed.
n the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the apparatus showing a portion of the jarring machine for forming the core; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the finished core and showing the manner of handling the same; and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail sectional views of the core box, the core pan, and the centering ring respectively.
n carrying out In invention I can use any form of jarring mec anism and in the drawings only a portion of one form of mechanism has been shown. This comprises a suitable frame 1 on which is mounted for vertical movement the machine plate 2. This may be elevated, then dropped and suddenly stopped byany suitable means, such-as providlng an air cylinder 3 to lift the same and permit the same to drop and strike an anvil 4. Any other means may, however, be 'em-- ployed for jarring the plate 2.
I The plate 2 is provlded on its upper face with a central circular depression 6 and centrally of this with a hole 7 preferably tapped, as shown, to receive a bolt for securing other parts of molding apparatus to said machine plate. Fitting in t a central depression 6 of the machine late is a centering plate 9 which forms t e bottom plate of the mold. This bottom plate is provided centrallv with an openin surrounded by an upwardly projecting wa or flange 10, said opening having practically perpen icular walls 11 at the top while below the same the walls may taper into jar the sand down into the mo wardly. Adapted to seat in this opening in the bottom plate is a metallic core pan 13 having edge portions 14 which fit closely against the walls of the opening in the bottom plate but do not extend up to the top of the wall or flan e 10. At its center the core an. is provide with a thickened portion or oss 15 which is provided with a threaded socket for receiving the lower end of a pipe 1 6 which is provided with perforations 17 and serves as a vent for the escape of the gases during casting. This. perforated pipe at. its upper end has secure to it an internallythread ed socket.18 to receive during the jarring operation a suitable closure, such as a plu 19 to prevent the entrance of sand into said pi e, and also serving as a convenient means or the attachment of a handle 20, as shown in Fig. 2, for carrying and otherwise handling the core.
' The core box 21' at its lower end is provided with a flange 22 resting on the flange or wall 10 of the bottom late and having a downturned lip 23 passlng down outside of said wall and serving to center the core box on the bottom plate. This core box will be made interiorly of the shape of the desired core, be-
ing shown as tapering toward the top, and at its base it projects inwardly beyond the inner face of the wall 10, as shown at 24, was to leave between the same and the top of the edge 14 of the core pan ans pace 25 into which the sand will fill in order to provide a covering of sand above the edge of the core pan andprevent the hot metal in casting coming against said core pan. The core box may be 0 a single piece or formed in sections as shown.
In conjunction with this apparatus and for jarring purposes I provide a reservoir 27 of any des red construction. 1
In the use of the apparatus described the centering or mold bottom plate 9 is placed in the; depression 6 in the machine plate. A
core pan 13 with its perforated tube is then.
placed in the opening in the mold. bottom plate and) the to of the vent pipe 16 is closedy means of a p ug 19. The mold box 21 is 'then set down on to the flange of the mold bottom plate and the reservoir 27 laced on top of the core box. Sand is then I ed down into the reservoir, either by hand or suitable machine, and the machine set in o oration in the usual way.
When sufficiently jarred the sand is, cut
chine and I ex edltious v and with a minimum amount on' the bottom p ofl at the to of the core box and the reservoir remove( or the mold moved from under the reservoir. The plug 19; is then removed. and a handle 20 is screw'eddown into the 5 socket 18." The core box is then removed and the molded core, lifted out of the machine by'meansof the l1ahdle;,-2O, said pore being sup. orted bythe core pan 1 The core pan an perforated tube remainwith the core 10 during casting and will then be used in the a The core can be' making. of further cores. baked if desired or used green. The other mold parts will be so shaped asto bring the parting at the upper edge of the flange 26 15' which is formed on the core above the top edge of the core pan so that in casting t ie hot metal can not touch the.pan.-
The apparatus described is ofjsimple construction, can be adaptedto anvjarring-marovides for the making ofcores opening.
2.. Core molding apparatuscomprising a bottom plate provided with an opening surrounded b a flange or wall, a core pan seat-' mg 1n sau opening, and a core box open at top and bottom and seating on the flange surrounding theaopening in the bottom plate.
3. Sand molding apparatus comprising a v.botto'm' plate provgde with an opening sur- 40 roundedby a flange or wall, a core pan seating in the o ening in said plate with its edge portions be ow the top of the flange or wall thereon, and a core box open at the top and bottom and seating on the. flange or wall on the bottom plateand overhanging the edge of the pan to leave a space betweenitself and the tgp edge of the pan.
1 4. ore molding apparatus comprising a bottom plate provided with an opening sur,
rounded by a flange or Wall, a core pan having tapering edge portions fitting into said opening, and a core box open at top and bottom and/seating on the flange or wall of the bottor'frfplate. 1
5. Core molding a paratus comprising a bottom plate provide with an o ening, a core pan seated in said opening, a co umn secured to said core pan and having means at its upper end for the attachment of a handle, and a core box seating'on said bottom plate.
6. Core molding apparatus comprising a bottoinplate provided with a central cavlty, acore wan seating in said cavitv, a column secure to said core pan, and a threaded member on thcupper end of the column for the attachment ot a handle.
bottom plate provide with a central cavity, a core pan seating in said cavity, a tubular column rising-from said core pan, a threaded socket at the upper end of said column and a core box seatin on said bottom plate;
8. Core molding a paratus comprisin a bottom plate provide with a central cavity, a core pan seating in said cavity, a erforated ltnbe secured to said core pan and iaving internal threads at-its upper end, and a core ox seating on said bottom plate.
bottom plate provided with a central cavity, and a core pan seating in said cavity, a perforated ipe secured to-said core pan and provided at its upper end with means for the attachment of a handle.
10. Core molding apparatus comprising in combination a machine .plate provided with a central depression, a mold bottom plate fitting in said depression and provided with an opening, a core pan seating in said open ing. and a core box open at top and bottom and fitting on the bottom plate at the edge of said opening.
' In testimony whereof, I the said WILLIAM D. BERRY, have hereunto set my hand.
