SAMUEL MIGNAULT, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
' PRESS FOR DENTAL FLASKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,207, dated August 18, 1896. Application filed May 26, 1896. Serial No. 593,171. (No model.)
To a whom zit may concern;
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MIGNAUL'I, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Dental Flasks; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull,clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to dental vulcanizing apparatus; and its object is to provide an improved press for holding the flasks or molds under pressure during the vulcanizing process, so that as the rubber or other material melts therein it will be compressed, so as to give it the proper density and cause it to be uniformly vulcanized throughout the mass. In the ordinary process for holding such flasks the pressure has been produced by means of a screw or screws,which necessitates frequent attention in order to keep up the pressure. By my invention this is obviated, as the flasks are held in the press under spring-pressure, which will be continuous and uniform.
The invention consists, essentially, in a base upon which the flask rests, two vertical rods secured thereto, connected together at their upper ends by a cross-bar, a verticallymovable follower having an aperture or hole near each end,through which said rods loosely pass, coiled springs encircling said rods, with their ends confined between said follower and cross-bar, and a central handle secured to the upper side of said follower, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents a perspective view of a press constructed in accordance with my invention.
In the said drawing the reference-nun1eral 1 designates the base, preferably of metal and circular in form and formed with two lugs 2 near the edge or periphery, holding a flask in position when placed thereon. Secured to this base are two opposite vertical rods 3, connected together at their upper ends by a crossbar 4-. These rods pass loosely through apertures near the ends of a vertically-movable follower 5, and encircling the rods above said follower are coiled springs 6,the ends of which are confined between the follower and crossbar and the tendency of which is to press the follower downwardly. Secured centrally to said follower on the upper side is a rod 7, provided at the upper end with a handle 8, by which the follower may be elevated.
I11 using the press the follower is elevated by means of the handle and one or more flasks placed underneath the same. The handle is then let go, when the springs will press the follower down upon the flasks under a uniform continuous pressure, and as the rubber melts during the vulcanizing process it will be uniformly compressed in the flasks, requiring no attention until the vulcanization is completed.
When two or more flasks are inserted in the press, they are superimposed one above the other. When a single flask is placed therein, a block of any suitable material may be interposed between the same and the follower, so as to utilize the full pressure of the springs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a vulcanizing -press, the combination with the solid base having lugs 2, formed on its upper surface, the vertical rods 3, secured to said base, and the cross-bar 4, secured to the upper ends of said bars, of the follower 5, having apertures near each end through which said rods loosely pass, the rod 7, secured to said follower and provided with the lateral handle 8, and the coiled springs 6, encircling the upper ends of the rods 3, and confined between the follower and the cross-bar 4, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL MIGNAULT. \Vitnesses:
