To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE F. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Tonawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Molding Composition Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates t0 presses for molding composition blocks; and its object is to provide a quick and free-acting press which is simple and durable in construction, reliable in action, and by means of which composition blocks can be molded and readily removed from the mold when completed.
rIhe invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts to be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section of my improved press, showing the movable bottom in its lowermost position and the mold lled with the material ready to be compressed. Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the press in the act of compressing the material in the mold. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the mold lowered and the bottom of themold held elevated to permit the completed block to be removed. Referring in detail to the drawings, A designates the supporting-frame comprising a base a a head a', standards a2 su ortinor said head and connecting the same with the base, and corner tie-rods a3, serving to hold said head in a rigid manner against the pressure exerted thereon when molding a block, said tie-rod serving to further connect said head with the base.
The upper ends of the standards, which are preferably cylindrical, are screw-th readed and passed through apertures in the head a.
Adjusting-nuts B are screwed onto the said supports and bear against the upper and lower faces of said head to securely hold the same in any adjusted position. The tie-rods a3 are also passed through apertures in the head a2, and each rod has its upper end threaded for engagement with nuts a4, by means of which the head of the frame is held rigid and securely tied to the base a.
Secured centrally to the under side of the head a is a die O, of any suitable construction and of any desired design. The said die is adapted to compress the composition or stock in a mold D, which is secured to a verticallymovable platform E, guided on the standards and supported by toggle-levers F, connected in pairs by rods f, pivotally secured to the knee-joints thereof. Links f/ connect the toggle-levers with the yoked lower end of an operating-lever G, whereby said toggle-levers are actuated to elevate the platform.
Surrounding each of the standards a2 between the platform E and a retainer-cup H, secured to each standard adjacent the base, is a spiral spring H', said springs assisting in elevating the platform after being started by the toggle-levers, and also serving to cushion the drop of the platform after a block is molded. 1
The mold D and the die which fits into said mold may be of any desired outline; but in all cases the mold is provided with a movable bottom or follower I, which normally rests onthe platform E and 'has secured thereto supporting-pins J, which pass through apertures K in the platform. y
Two upright guides L extend from the base, and held adjustably between said guides is a supporting-plate L, whereby the bottom of the mold is held elevated after a block is completed to permit the latter to be conveniently removed, as will presently appear. The said supporting-plate is provided with a rectangular top plate Z, having apertures Z, through which the supporting-pins J are passed when the parts are'in their normal positions. Secured to opposite sides of the supporting-plate L are brackets M, to which are secured semielliptic springs fm, that support buffer-plates N, against which the lower ends of the supporting-pins J strike. In order that the movable bottom may beheld elevated the proper distance within the mold and that when lowered the supporting -pins thereof may be properly cushioned in their descent, adjusting-screws n enter the bottom of the supporting-plate L and serve as rests therefor. Held movable on the top plate Z of the supportingplate is a movable support or check-plate O, 'having apertures 0, that are spaced to register with the supporting-pins J and with the apertures in the top plate Z. A bracket P is secured to one of the upright guides L, and attached thereto is one end of a retractile spring R, which has its other end secured to the check-plate O, serving to draw the latter to one side when the platform is elevated and the supporting-pins J are withdrawn from the apertures in the supporting-plate L and the said check-plate O, thereby bringing the apertures in the latter out of registration with the supporting-pins J and the apertures in the supporting-plate.
S designates a foot-treadle, having secured thereto one end of a cord or cable s, which passes over a pulley s, secured to the supporting-plate, and has its other end secured to the check-plate. On lowering the treadle S the check-plate is moved to bring the apertures therein into registration with vthe supporting-pins J and the apertures in the supporting-plate, thereby allowing the bottom of the mold to drop against the platform, the drop ofl said bottom being cushioned by the pins striking the buffer-plate. The check-plate O is provided at one end with a depending rib T, which serves as a stop to limit the extent of movement of said plate when actuated by the foot-treadle, thereby assuring proper registration of the apertures 0 therein with the apertures in the supporting-plate.
In operation the parts of the machine are normally positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the mold being filled with material to be compressed. In operating the press the operating-lever is taken hold of'and lowered to the position shown in Fig. 2, which causes the toggle-levers F to swing into a vertical position, thereby elevating the platform to bring the mold D into coaction with the die for molding the material into block or any other desired form. When the platform is being elevated, the supporting-pins J arewithdrawn from the apertures in the supporting-plate and the apertures in the check-plate, and the latter, through the action of the spring R, is shifted to bring the apertures therein out of registration with the apertures in the supporting-plate and the said supporting-pins. After the material has been compressed the platform is lowered, as shown in Fig. 3, the movable bottom of the mold following with the platform until checked by the ends of the supporting-pins J striking the check-plate O. After the platform is lowered the completed block is removed from the movable bottom, which is held elevated b V the check-plate, and a slight pressure on the foot-treadle will cause the check-plate to be shifted so as to bring the apertures therein into registration with the apertures in the supporting-plate, when the bottom of the mold is permitted to gravitate by reason of the supporting-pins J thereof passing through said apertures and striking against the buffer-plates on opposite sides of the supporting-plate L.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isH 1. In a molding-press, the combination of a frame, a die rigidly secured to the frame, a mold movable toward and from said die and having a loose bottom, supporting-pins secured to said bottom, and a check-plate beneath said pins to hold the bottom elevated during the last portion of the return movement of the sides of the mold, said check-plate having apertures to permit the said supporting-pins to pass through the same when shifted to bring the apertures therein in line with the said supporting-pins.
2. In a molding-press, the combination of a frame, a die rigidly secured to the frame, a mold movable toward and from the die and having a loose bottom free to move'between the sides of the mold, supporting-pins secured to said loose bottom, means for holding said bottom elevated while the remaining portion of the mold is returned to its lowered or normal position, and a spring-supported bufferplate against which said pins strike when the said bottom is lowered to its normal position.
3. In a molding-press, the combination of a frame, a die rigidly secured to the frame, a platform movable toward and from said die and having apertures therein, a mold having a loose bottom and being secured to said platform, supporting-pins secured to said bottom and extending through the apertures in said platform, and a spring-supported buffer-plate against which said pins strike when the said bottom is lowered to its normal position.
4. In a molding-press, the combination of a frame, a die rigidly secured to the frame, a platform movable toward and fromI said die and having apertures therein, a mold having a loose bottom and being secured to said platform, supporting-pins secured to said bottom and extending through the apertures in said platform, a spring-supported buffer-plate against which said pins strike when the said bottom is lowered to its normal position, and means for adjusting said buffer-plate with reference to the said bottom.
5. In a molding-press, the combination of a frame,a die rigidly secured to the frame, a platform movable toward and from said die and having apertures therein, a mold having a loose IOO bottom and being secured to said platform, supporting-pins seeured to said bottom and extending' through theapertures in said plat-` striking against said buffer-plate when the said loose bottom of the mold is lowered to its normal position.
6. In a molding-press, the combination of a frame, a die rigidly secured to the frame, a platform movable toward and from said die and having apertures therein, a mold having a loose bottom and being secured to said platform, supporting-pins secured to said bottom and extending through the apertures in said platform, an adjustable supporting-plate, a checkplate carried on said supporting-plate and serving to hold the bottom of the mold elevated while the connected sides thereof are lowered to their normal position, springs secured to said supporting-plate, and a bufferplate oarried by said springs, said supportingpins striking against said buffer-plate when the said loose bottom of the mold is lowered to its normal position.
7. In a molding-press, the combination of a frame, a die affixed to said frame, a platform guided on said frame, means for moving said platform toward and from said die, a mold secured to said platform for coaction with said die, said mold having a loose bottom movable between the sides thereof, supporting-pins secured to said loose bottom, a support having apertures, a cheek-plate carried by said support and having apertures registering with the apertures in said support, means for moving said check-plate to bring the apertures therein out of registration with the apertures in said support, and spring-supported bufferplates against which said supporting pins strike when the said loose bottom is lowered to its normal position. l A
8. In a molding-press` the combination of a frame, a die affixed to said frame, a platform guided on said frame and having apertures therein, means for moving said platform toward and from said die, a mold secured to said platform for ooaotion with said die and having a loose bottom, supporting-pins secured to said loose bottom and extending down through the apertures in said platform, an adjustable support having apertures in line with said supporting-pins, a cheek-plate movable on said support to open or close the apertures in the latter, a spring tending to move said check-plate so as to close the apertures in the support, and means for moving said check-plate against the action of said spring to cause the apertures in said support to be opened to allow the said movable bottom to gravitate to its normal position.
