IlnrTTnn STATES PATENT FFIQIE...
LOUIS SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COivlBlNATlON TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,365, dated April 28, 1903.
Application filed May 12, 1902. Serial No. 107,000. (No model.) 7
T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combinationtool, and more particularly to combined gripping and cutting pliers.
The object of the invention is to provide cheap and simple gripping-pliers of great strength adapted to be readily converted into a cutting-tool when so desired.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and more fully set forth and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of gripping-pliers provided with adjustable cutting-blades and showing the same retracted. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cutting-blades in cutting position. Fig. 3 is an end elevation taken at the hinge or joint. Fig. is a cross sectional View through the gripping-jaws and cutters, the holding-pins for said cutters being shown in elevation. Fig. 5 isa side elevation showing the removable jaws.
As shown in said drawings, A and A indicate the two arms or levers of the grippingpliers, which are united at the extremities in the hinge (indicated as a whole by B) and shaped adjacent thereto to form seats for the gripping-jaws a a. Said hinge is constructed, preferably, as follows: One ofsaid arms or levers-as, for instance, A--is cut away centrally, as shown in Fig. 3, to provide the rounded lateral knuckles b 1), between which the knuckle Z) on lever A engages. A rivet or pintle (indicated by B) is passed through the joint thus formed, and the ends thereof are closed down and firmly engaged on the knuckles b l). The inner ends of said levers or the jaws adjacent to the hinge are suitably sizes. Preferably a link C is provided on the outer extremity of one" of said levers and engages over the other arm and acts to hold the jaws in gripping position when once secured. Pivotally secured at e on each of said levers adjacent to the hinged end thereof are cutters D, which are of a length to extend rearwardly a sufficient distance to engage material gripped between the jaws. Said cutters or knives are normally held in a retracted or inoperative position by means of the pins or set-screws d, which extend therethrough and engage suitable apertures cl in the levers, said pins or screws being adapted to be removed to permit the knives to be swung inwardly upon their pivots e to cause their cutting edges to approach, as in Figs. 2 and 45, when the pins or screws 01 may be inserted in the innermost apertures d to lock the knives in cutting position.
Obviously many different types of instrn ments may be constructed substantially as described with the cutters pivoted as preferred to operate either adjacent to the hinge or remote therefrom.-
The seat in the inner faces of the lever may be of any desired form, and the removable jaws ct-a are shaped to fit closely therein and to be secured in place by set-screws, as shown in Fig. 5. Said jaws may be pro vided in sets having differently-shaped gripping-surfaces, thus enabling one pairof pliers to be used for as many difierent purposes as desired.
Details of construction may be varied. without departing from the principles of this in-' vention.
. I claim as my invention 1. A combination-tool comprising coacting levers complementally shaped at one end to interfit and form a hinge, said levers'adjacent to the hinge thus formed being shaped to provide grippingsurfaces, and adjustable cutters pivoted on the levers and adapted to be adjusted into cutting engagement with the material engaged between said lovers.
2. In a combination-tool, the combination with levers shaped to interfit and form a hinge at one end of a knife pivoted on each end adjacent to the hinge, a set-screw engaging in each lever and acting normally to hold the Q I veaeee knives out of cutting relation and removable In testimony whereof I have hereunto snbe to permit adjustment of the knives. scribed my name in the presence of two sub- 3.
