H0 MODEL- I flV/Zfar 50% [70666 8 0/6 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. OSSENFORT, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN BROOM 85 BRUSH 00., OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
.BRooM.
:SPECIFIGATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 726,096, dated April 21, 1903.
Application filed October 28, 1902. Serial No. 129,166.. (No mode!) T at whom it mag concern: 7
Be it known that I, JoHN'F. OssENFoRr, a citizen of the United-States, residing-at Amsterdam, in the county of'Montgo'mery and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements inBroo ms, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to brooms, the object of the same being to provide means-whereby at the same time permitting of the free spread of the straws of which the head of the broom is made.
ties thereof greatly improved.
The invention consists'of a broom having a metallic clamping-band embracing or encircling the head thereof ,near its upper. end;- which band is laterally crimpedor corru-' 2o gated, so as to closely engage throughout its width the side edges ofthehead;
The invention also consists in certain feaare of the ordinary form and construction. Embracing or encircling the head 1, however,
a short distance from the upper end thereof,
is a metallic clamping band or bridle 3, preferably constructed of sheet metal and secured to the head 1 of the broom by means of nails, rivets, or other suitable attaching devices. The band'3is providedwith lateral corrugations 4:, extending from the upper edge'ef said, band to a point intermediate the upper and lower edges-thereof. The said corrugations the head of abroomis retained in shape while The life-of the broom as a whole is thereby augmented and the sweeping' quali- =lodge.
The head 1 and the handle 2 of thebroom' serve, therefore, to crimpor contract the upper edge-of said clamping-band, so that the same is of smaller diameter'around its upper edge than around itslower edge. The opposite sides of said band are also thus made to lie at an, angle to each other. When the band 3 is applied to the head 1 of the broom, as shown,'it'close ly embraces all parts of the same, th'inner surfaces of the side edges of said band lying in close contact at all points with theside edges of the head 1. The head is thusfirmlyfret'ained in' 'shape, thereby increasing the life'of the broom, and the straws of which? the headis made are capable of freely spreading, which'improves the sweeping qualities of the broom. I am aWa-re'that it has heretofore been proposed; to applya flat metallic clamping-band to the head of a broom' for the purpose of retaininggthe samein "shape. 1 Therefore I do not claim, broadly,the use of a metallic clamp ing-band.
The corrugations 4 in the band 3 serve not only to crimp the upper edge of said band so that it will conform to the flaring side edges of the broom, but said corrugations also provide pockets into which the outer straws may The lateral movement of the straw in the broom-head is therefore prevented by said corrugations. v
- Having described my invention, what I .claim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A broom having a clamping-band embrac- *'ii1g the v head thereof, said band being pro- "vided with lateral corrugations extending from the upper edge thereof, and the lower 'edgeof said band being plain or smooth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two'fsubsoribi'ng wit-- nesses.
JOHN FIOS SENFORT.
