Description
E c.v woonsnm Carriage-Spring. No .725. Patented'May 4, 1838. x
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. G. WOODSIDE, OF AUGUSTA, MAINE.
onnnmen-srnme.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 725, dated May 4, 1838.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE G. WOOD- SIDE, of Augusta, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Springs for Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in applying the scroll or volute spring to carriages, of all those kinds to which springs are to be applied; which springs I inclose in any suitable box or case, or affix in any convenient way so that the inner end of said spring shall be permanently attached to any permanent support of sufficient strength to resist the force which is to be applied to it, while the outer end of said spring has attached to it the links and braces by which the carriage is to be suspended, and has suflicient play to produce the effect intended.
In the accompanying drawing a, a, Figures l and 2, is a wing-like box in which the spring 6, b, is contained, one side of said box being removed to exhibit the spring, the inner end of which is securely fastened to the inner rim of the box, at 72 and its outer end, furnished with its connecting link 0,
plays through a slot in the outer rim of the box 6. The box may be attached to the carriage by a clasp, d, Fig.2, suitably braced, or have such other attachment as may be preferred. For carriages of ordinary weight four such springs will be sufficient, but two or more may be combined together as in Fig. 2, so as to act at each point of suspension, when circumstances may render this desirable. Although such scroll or volute springs are well known, and have been long used for various purposes, they have not heretofore been employed in the manner described to the purpose to which I have applied them, namely, that of carnage springs.
I therefore claim as my invention, and ask an exclusive right to The adaptation and application of such springs to carriages substantially in the manner herein set forth.
ELBRID GE G. WOOD SIDE.
